Tiscali buys Pipex broadband unit

UK internet firm Pipex has sold its broadband and phone business to Italian rival Tiscali for £210m.

The sale of the division follows a four-month strategic review of Pipex by investment bank UBS.

The purchase of Pipex's broadband unit - which was put up for sale last March - is set to lift Tiscali's UK broadband customer base to about 1.4 million.

Tiscali also reported a first-half core profit of 60m euros (£40.7m; $82.7m), up 45% on last year.

Should those of us with Pipex (including Freedom 2 Surf) be worried?

I'm going to wait and see what it means for customers. It isn't as if there are loads of other wonderful ISPs to choose from in this country :( I am currently with F2S and they are one of, if not the cheapest for the service I am getting. That is to say, £14.99 for 5 gigs, and unlimited off peak. (that's on a monthly contract)

The details are a bit harder to nail down right now, Pipex Communications have sold the 'consumer' part of the business which does include the old Pipex internet business and HomeCall, also the Bulldog consumer base that they bought but they have not listed Nildram as a company they have sold which could make sense as it was a part of the business division not the consumer division.

More news to come I expect so have to wait and see.

Nildram seem to have been being run down for a while now, ive had muchos down time since my line was changed to LLU, Tiscali dont seem to anything to pffer that would improve Nildrams CS, i will give em a couple of month to see what the score is

Wow. When I first went ADSL some 5 years ago Pipex were the nuts of the broadband industry. Now they're gonna be Tiscali owned.. Oh dear, what a fall from grace!

Holy poo

Thats im im leaving pipex

not sure where to go though but im off .

Likewise... Well my other half's family is with pipex, but I manage it for them. They got full Sky TV, so what's Sky BB like?

any word on whats going to happen to the sister companies that pipex owns like freedom to surf and nildram ?

are those customers all going to become tiscali customers ?

Just been looking at Be and it looks pretty good, however my other half's family's broadband can't have Be :( So looks like I may head down the Sky route.

However Be is good for us :)

I would say so, if Pipex own them and they have been bought out then surely all the other companys go with it

The main Company, Pipex Communications, has not been sold but that doesn't matter as both Nildram and F2S were trading styles of Pipex Internet which has been sold, so yes, Nildram and F2S customers will soon belong to Tiscali.

From freedom to surf last night:
As you may have read this afternoon Tiscali has acquired the broadband customer base of Pipex Group, which covers freedom2surf, Nildram, Homecall, Bulldog and Pipex Retail customers amongst others.

Yeah, I'd consider my options if I was on one of those ISPs.

entanet is the only isp worth having these days, zen etc are good, but the price to performance ratio on entanet is unmatched IMO
