tl;dr

There shouldn't be a semi-colon in it.

We have no use for it in modern english language. It should be colon or a comma.

The semi-colon is there just for aesthetic reasons.

It links sentences that are related but can be independent or to separate lists with internal punctuation e.g where commas are already used since a semi-colon is stronger than than a comma. There are other uses but those would be the main ones for me.

Of course it is there for aesthetic reasons; punctuation is basically all about aesthetics which will aid legibility. ;)

out of curiosity, if the first person to comment on this thread were to type 'tl;dr' would you have let them off as they would be playing around, or would you still have suspended them?
