It links sentences that are related but can be independent or to separate lists with internal punctuation e.g where commas are already used since a semi-colon is stronger than than a comma. There are other uses but those would be the main ones for me.

Of course it is there for aesthetic reasons; punctuation is basically all about aesthetics which will aid legibility.

I should have been dispensed with ages ago and have more or less said that much to them (I'm temping for the moment) but for some unknown reason they keep claiming they will get busy and insist on keeping me on.
