Hi friends,

I've just spent the afternoon backing up data off my 160GB Maxtor SATA drive.
Format E: in dos. Format complete.

THE DATA STILL EXISTS!?!

That's right. Whatever I do to the disk structure, it forgets it.

I want to get rid of the 70GB of porn. Please help.

Okay i've done a chkdsk.

Anyone know what those chkdsk errors are?

I'm going to make a boot disk and try it from dos.

Okay, on PC number 2.

I'm running DBAN, just selected the drive and hit Start.

Slightly concerned at the amount of time it is taking, is there anyway to cancel or pause it?

Says: [06.67%, round 1 of 1, pass 1 of 3] [writing] [ 57160 KB/s]

Let's hope this does it.

Okay I've got DBAN running though. If I reset the PC (can't stop DBAN it seems?) will that kill the disk? I'm getting fed up of waiting this is going to take all evening.

Was supposed to be a simple exercise, backup disk, format disk, package disk.
Why me?

I feel so stupid I can't believe this happened. I'm never downloading porn again.

Well it reads the memory and then when it would normall read the HDDs it stops. Looks like its crashed as the FAN RPMs arent moving. help?

Right, I've tried deleting the porn etc in windows. It deletes it, but if I refresh the folder it re-appears. Something isn't right there.

I've tried both a Quick Format, and a Full Format.
I have run DBAN, the data still exists.

Next, i'm trying to make a boot disk, load windows and try format there.

Am now trying this.
I have done nothing today except try to format this bloody HDD. Its boiling hot, I have so much to do and the drive will only profit £20 anyway.

Update: Seem to have killed my new NEC DVDRW by plugging in the molex whilst PC is switched on. :mad:

. Now off to find another drive.

Okay guys, couldnt run the LiveCD as i've destroyed my DVDRW.
Never a good idea to plug the molex power cable into the drive whilst the machine is running.. Other DVD drive ive found doesnt work (destroyed IDE bus as well?)

I'm practically exhausted from this, the cost of buying a new DVD burner outweighs the time and financial gain of selling the HDD in the first place.

If anyone can suggest some quick ideas (with links) of ways to format the drive (without CD/floppys) that would be appreciated. I know it's late.

Thanks for the amusement it's certainly helping in this situation.

I was thinking maybe partition magic may do the trick?

UPDATE:

NecroFile creates 17 files in the root of size 1.86GB. When I try to add directories and files, it says the location cannot be found, gives an error and crashes. Nice. On with System Mechanic.
