To Slim or not to Slim....that is the question !

lol no PS2 support anymore? I mean, why let people play them on the PS3 when you can make them buy a new PS2 as well!

been thinking about it with mine but i love the piano black finish and chrome edging and would miss the extra usb slots what with having Singstar/Buzz/PS3 Eye/ Headset all requiring usb slots. Plus my PS3 still hasn't got a single scratch on it after all this time!, it would be a crime to swap out for the slim which i find to be ugly in comparison TBH.

Shop around and the outlay can quite easily go down to £50, I say go for it, at least then you have the piece of mind of a brand spanking new warranty. Plus you'll be 'upgrading' to a Dual Shock 3 pad as part of the deal.

Hmmm, I was thinking of selling my 60gb unit and getting a slim, it never occured to me to do a trade.

I got a refurb 60gb unit in May, and with it, a full 12 month warranty (in writing) so I don't know if that will make it worth any more.

I don't use the PS2 backwards compatibility any more. I do have God of War II here, but that'll be coming out soon on bluray anyway, so can always get that. The only thing I'd miss, is the USB ports, as with PlayTV, USB memory stick, and USB cables for charging/PSP use, I do use more than 2. Still, a hub would sort that... or just swap cables now and then.

The main reason I was interested in the Slim though, is noise... as well as lower power consumption.

My PS3 is used a lot, every day... from PlayTV, to streaming media, to watching blurays and DVDs, and sometimes I play games too, but the unit itself is used daily, for many hours, so the electricity savings may be worth it.

I'd assumed that the Slim, being lower powered/newer design, would be near silent. This doesn't appear to be the case.
My 60gb unit isn't exactly noisy, but I can hear it when I'm watching a movie, which I dislike. During games it doesn't bother me one way or the other.

My Brother has a 40gb unit, and I've had it here, in the same place as my 60gb unit, and I never heard a peep out of it. It was on for hours, upscaling DVDs, and at the end of it, I went right over to it for a listen, and I couldn't hear anything. My PS3 would've been up to "level 3" by then. This is why I wanted a Slim.... however, if the noise level is an issue, then maybe I'll keep the 60gb unit just for games, and pick up a half decent standalone bluray player sometime, and use that for DVD/bluray, and just keep the PS3 for games and streaming.

Sadly I don't know anybody with a Slim to go and have a listen to.
I have quite a number of mates with 60gb and 40gb units, and in each case, the 40gb units I've seen seem to be near silent, if not totally silent. A neighbour here has her 40gb unit in an enclosed space under her TV, and even during upscaling of movies, the fans don't seem to spin up, just like my Brothers.

It's a shame that there isn't a way to view the temperature of the CPU on the PS3, to see exactly what's going on in there. When my fans do fire up to level 3, the air coming out is barely warm... I'm sure the thing doesn't need to have the fans spinning that much.

My 2nd 60gb unit though, and both the same, so I guess it's how it's meant to be.

Anyway, back on topic, I'll have to look into a trade in, and see how much I'd have to pay in total to get a Slim... or maybe wait until next year, when my 12 month warranty is running down a bit, and do the trade then, getting a fresh 12 months at the same time.

Vin.

Well, thanks for all the posts in here - I have decided to keep my 60Gb PS3.

When all is said and doen, it does work perfectly and has yet to skip a beat. I dolike the card reader and the chrome and shiny bits mean I won't be getting a Slim right now :)

Many thanks
