Today I recieved some alloy wheels....

ya ok, but wheels aside now, I want to learn more about lowering the car, Ive had a bounce round on google etc and found this page:

http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/vw golfmk4/suspension.html

Assuming Ive understood the site correctly at £115 the Pro-Kit performance springs are within budget for me, and offer me up to 50mm scope in lowering, so would this be what I need?

You need to lower it 120mm+

A quick guide to making a modern VAG look good:

Step 1: Go to www.cleaned.be
Step 2: Browse the galleries
Step 3: Understand the relationship between OEM and 'cleaned' styling
Step 4: Apply to Bora.

quite like "RA04" style ones, but even if I went with these in 17's I'd still need to have the car lowered for it to look right?
I like them as well, its a shame you can't see a bigger picture of them with the tires fitted though.

agreed that does look very sweet penski!

Im on a bit of a budget though and from what Ive learnt so far by browsing the lowering kit alone costs £500, then I need new roll bars and strut braces etc etc, this seems too expensive for me, and I dont intend to spend huge amounts on a car that Im only planning on having for a few years.

I feel that if I manage to lower the car around 50mm then the looks would be vastly improved, and the costs not too much, Im just not sure on the level of work fitting new springs requires, Im no mug when it comes to practical stuff but my knowledge of cars is very basic.

Doesn't look good. The 19s are too big and it looks a bit like a caricature. They're probly so heavy it'll ruin the handling anyway. Boras look best with 17s possibly 18s for some designs, and maybe a 15-25mm drop. I'd suggest BBS RC or RXs or something VAG OEM like Santa Monica or Long Beach.

I think it looks fine myself, lowering it like penski suggested in that picture would be even more attrocious imo. :)

what size brakes do the boras have anyway?

Depends on model. Usually 288 or 312mm front and 224/256mm rear if memory serves. Pretty big for the size of car. Rears will still look bottle top size under the 19s tho...

looks like penski was right.....bora looks like it wants to be a touareg

needs 50mm lowering, stat (does look sweet in the weeds on penski's photoshop tho)

I'd never get over any speed humps and it'd be pig to be driven in with a 50mm drop. But it it looks "sweet" then that's OK then ;)

Air ride - best of both worlds ;)

He would be fine... say after the tyres, you got 2" extra tyre diameter... This means the car right now is running an inch higher than it is stock. lower it 50mm, and it will be only 1 inch lower than it should... hardly gonna be scraping the speed bumps now is it?

I got away with a 60mm drop on my car, and I kept my tyre radius the same, 165/60/r14 to 195/45/r15, and have no problems with speed humps, but them I got a 205, not a borat. :D

The 19s do look a bit too big - I like the R32 style - but would have probably stuck to 18s (which is the OEM R32 fitment).

Lowering would help a lot as it's a bit off-road stylee at the moment.

What's the ride like with those on? My 1.8T Bora is on the standard Castallet 16s and thats on the firm side of comfy for me, I've held off getting anything larger to avoid getting bone shaker low profiles.

Nice to see another Bora owner on the forum :)

The ride is good, and on the dual-carriageway at ~70 its much quieter than the standard 16's with Pirelli P6000's fitted.

Def gonna lower the car, and so far looks like a good pair of coilovers will do the job nicely, hopefully around a 30-40mm drop should improve the looks well.

JFYI these 19" TSW wheels with the mint Avon Cooper 2XS tyres only cost me £460...

The 16's will probably have a 55mm wall (205/55/R16 being quite standard), the 19's have a 35mm wall, so 20mm difference which isn't even an inch, so there's at least 2" difference in total diameterwhich again will surely play a big part in acceleration on the car.

That's not how tyre sizing works

205/55R16

205mm wide

tyre wall height is 55% of 205mm

16 is the diameter of wheel in inches.

Gr1mey hasn't said what size his originals (presumably 205/55R16) or his new 19" are. Without all the info no-one can say if the size will affect performance. Weight and weight distribution of the wheel/tyre combo will also affect performance.

Too big for the arches, and I don't think it would look that much better dropped.

A set of the RS4's (no more than 18" though) and a 35-40mm drop would look lovely.
