Today's mass shooting in the US

Why not? Other countries have successfully removed guns from the population. This strikes me as simple defeatism. Even modest steps like taking assault rifles out of civilian hands would help a lot.

It feels like you don't understand what you're dealing with, the United States is such a fundamentally extreme, intense and different country - to someone from the EU or UK.

The problem we're trying to solve is kids getting massacred in schools. That problem is solved by getting rid of guns.

The best way to solve a problem, is to understand the root cause of it.

Something is driving people to commit these acts, the fact that guns are the primary weapon is of course important - but what's behind the desire to go and actually go out and commit mass murder in this way?

If you took the guns away, would you also simultaneously take away the driving force behind someone who wants to commit mass murder of children?

'Assault rifle' lmao. Simply by using that terminology it shows you don't actually know anything. Oh, and you think criminals will go and give up their guns?

Guns haven't simply disappeared in Australia, there are actually more guns in circulation now than before 96 for example. Additionally only about a 1/5 of the guns were handed over following the crackdown.

Using Australia is such a lazy example, it's an entirely different kettle of fish to a country like America.

You know, the therapy part still stands ;)

Mental illness isn't unique to trans people iirc.

No it isn't, but the post I replied to and quoted says:

"Instead of injecting people full of hormones, unbalancing their body in an extreme way and exacerbating their illness, maybe they need therapy instead."

Am I to understand he ws advocating for more mental help for all, or mainly that Trans people need it?

And you don't think injecting people full of hormones, unbalancing their body in an extreme way doesn't exacerbate their mental illness?

Many of what are branded as "assault rifles" in the US aren't that different to what some people in the UK own - there are plenty of people, within those who own firearms in the UK, who have military stylised rifles in intermediate rifle calibres though mostly straight pull rather than semi-automatic and few in the US own fully automatic rifles of this nature. While we don't see anything like the same problem in the UK even when adjusting the figures like for like.

There are a lot of people in America that just want to see their own country burn, and they're all from the left. Expect more of these to happen.

Yes, it's definitely left-wing nutters that mainly shoot up schools

Right or left, at least if they massively improved the laws on gun ownership, it would save innocent lives.

It would save lives in the long term, especially concerning high powered rifles.

However in this case, you've got to consider that this person went in with a map of the school, tooled up - it was premeditated and meticulously planned and it looked like they had an axe to grind, this wasn't just an "off the cuff" moment of madness.

I don't accept that if this person didn't have access to guns then there wouldn't have been a problem, they'd probably have just looked to other means to cause carnage and that's the hard part.

Understanding why people are motivated to do this in the first place.

You're right that the US is very different from Europe.

It seems rather ridiculous to me to think that this is an easier problem to solve than the already hard problem of solving the US's gun problem.

Well that's the point isn't it.

By getting rid of the guns, you wouldn't actually be solving the problem at all, you'd just be moving it elsewhere.

As in this particular case: If a persons view of the world has become so warped and broken, to the point where they feel the need to go to a school and shoot children - what good is removing guns going to do?

They might just bomb the school instead?

It'll take a way a commonly used method of killing lots of people quickly

Yeah, because it's so easy to make bombs without raising suspicion...

They literally do a full background check every time to look for political affiliations and sympathies. So yeah, pretty much.
That's a lot of background checking

Shame they can't do background checks on people in every state before they buy guns.
