Today's UK Government Farce - Passports

was more of a faff getting a photo that the website said was good than anything else
I really struggled to get a photo that I thought would be good enough. In the end, I photographed a printed picture that I’d had for ages which I’d used for something else. I was convinced they’d bounce it as being cropped too tightly but surprisingly it was accepted.

Yep they accepted the worst one I thought I'd taken

Took about 9 weeks for my renewal. And even though I've had my new passport sat on my desk next to me since the 2/4, the tracker still says:-

Have just applied for our son’s passport. We fly on the 21st of May… the website thought it would be around 5 weeks. Let’s see! A combination of not having his birth certificate and covid has really cut it quite fine for applying!

GHIC will be the next thing! We have decent enough travel insurance but the GHIC would reduce hassle I’m sure!

It's gone crazy here too.
Different system here where you need to book an appointment but the first available are not until August/September....

That's insanity, last month you could get one for next day .

Everyone suddenly clicked that they can travel freely this year....

Apologies for the bump... but just a mini rant (albeit I'm not really angry, more of a facepalm frustration). Had to renew one of my kid's passports, and because they're a dual national and have a second passport (issued by another country) it seems I have to send the original foreign passport along with the old expired British passport to confirm their identity. I don't see why they're even allowed to ask that (passport of another sovereign state is nothing to do with them)? I know it's to support confirming their identity - but they were born in the UK, already had a UK passport, this is a renewal so it's not as if they're not already on the system. Just seems pointless and it means we cannot travel if we potentially wanted to (academic at the moment as it's school time - but that's not the point).

Our renewals have come back, taken about 20 days from application to them being received.

The boys (new passports) obviously taking longer. It's the time between documents being delivered and their acknowledged receipt that took forever.

I found the opposite. Both kids were quicker than mine and my wife's (ours were renewals, there's brand new). What's funny is that I had to send them to 4 different addresses, even though I did the online bit one after the other.

I damaged my kids passports and applied in February, I still haven't got them.

Bizarrely I applied to renew my passport 2 weeks ago and it turned up today.

I'm trying to chase my kids ones but can never get through on the phone, you either go into a queue and get cut off after waiting a couple of minutes or get cut off straight away.

More Great British incompetence.....

Oh man, you should try dealing with government services in some other countries. Germany stands out as being particularly difficult. Spain too but for different reasons.

The UK has had a digital by default approach since 2010. Doing most things, and getting them renewed is a breeze in comparison.

I've got my first trip abroad planned for second week of June.....nearly 3 months I thought, no problem getting mine renewed, after all it only takes a few weeks, tops.

Now looks like I'll be lucky to get it back in time.

Reminder to anyone that needs theirs doing to do it ASAP, and would be good to hear of people getting theirs in less than 10 weeks....

Looks like just an excuse to bash this country. And a Guardian link. What else can one expect.

Most people who post a Guardian link or who send you Guardian articles are only doing it to say LOOK I READ THE GUARDIAN, I AM PART OF THE REALISED, AWARE, LEFT-WING INTELLIGENSIA

When in truth, the Guardian is just sensationalist clickbait no better than the Daily Mail.

As most people have said in this thread, new passports take about 2 weeks. My dad reordered his last month and it took 2 weeks as well.

Mine came back in about 3 weeks, but as others on this thread attest, many are not getting theirs back in a timely fashion, so the article is correct.

If you feel the need to attach your identity to a media outlet, you probably need to step away from the keyboard and calm down a bit

I used to live in Germany....I kinda got used to dealing with the authorities, it did involve taking a number and waiting a while...but at least you knew if you turned up at the Amt you'd get your issue sorted out that day!

My passport ran out in Nov 2020. I initiated the online renewal with new online photo code at the beginning of March and was booking a holiday with passport in hand before the month had ended.

I should add....I've got my new passport back....but no sign of my old one. Fortunately I don't have any visas I need in it....

I thought it was quite efficient. Received mine last week, took a couple of weeks and all done on mobile including a selfy.

No  you must follow the narrative that the UK passport office is in meltdown. The Guardian said so.

There must be a problem for certain applications, as said my adult renewal took two weeks but two child replacements are still being processed and they were submitted 11 weeks ago. Maybe it is dependant on what office it goes to.

I just renewed my daughter's, online, normal renewal. Just had an email it's been printed so shouldn't be too much longer. It's taken about 4 weeks so far including getting someone to confirm identity and sending birth certificate. Which doesn't seem too bad to me.
