Tokyo Olympics 2020

I guess everything looks like politics when you don't get out of your basement

If she stopped competing today she'd still be the greatest gymnast of all time, she doesn't need to preserve anything.

Its not about "proving" anything its about letting your team down you your country puts you in that position flies you to Tokyo and you have a bad hair day and suddenly its "brave" not to compete. Everything these days is "me me me" theres no sense of obligation to teammates, country etc. Now if they felt her replacement is better perfomer on the day then thats a different matter but to just walk out and leave your team in limbo is no way to conduct yourself.

The whole media obsession with one athlete is tiresome you don't see the same obsession with russian or chinese or japanese athletes or...

Professional? That implies payment for services rendered. Pretty much the antithesis of what the Olympics is.

Eh? the Olympics has been all about professional athletes for years now.

Again...

Smh.....

Smh.

Forcing yourself to carry on when you aren't physically or mentally able to perform at the required level, is how you let your team down.

'Bad hair day' I guess top-level sport should sack all the sports psychologists, load of nonsense eh....

during her floor exercises , they had commented that the flooring was an acquired taste, in terms of energy return, and, suggested it contributed to some errors,
like the wimbledon slippery grass debacle/injury liability.
so although it's the same for all, can imagine that p**** someone off.

So, exactly what she did then?

There is the right time to do these things. Imagine if you turned up to watch a football match and the players turned around and said "sorry guys, we aren't feeling it today" and walked off after 5 minutes after going a goal down. If you are struggling with the pressure then you will know that before the event, especially if you are the top female gymnast in the world.

Wow so you literally know nothing about sport funding.

No I don't. :p

I'm sure it will be peanuts though and what she's already given in return I think counts as "more than enough".

You wouldn't expect her to compete on a broken leg. Why should she compete when her mind is not right?

If you fail at rowing because your heads not in it, the chances of injuring yourself is pretty low. Team GB lost the plot in a race earlier and nearly went into another boat. They missed it but even if they did, the chances of themselves breaking their necks were relative low.

The consequences of bodging a vault/somersaulting through the air and not landing properly is slightly more serious.

Footballers just trot around for 90 minutes not giving a **** and collect that pay check thank you very much. How many times have fans been frustrated by the lack of effort from certain players who can get away with not turning up for weeks/months on end.

I'm not sure there's a lot of point continuing this discussion if you think you know her state of mind better than she does. Taking armchair sports to a whole new level.

can't see what tokyo floor is compared to Rio ?
How is Biles able to bounce so high off the floor? Mostly, because she’s a tremendous athlete. It also helps, though, that there are literal springs beneath the surface.

spells out numerous requirements for the floor exercise performance area. The floor “shall have a square format,” must “guarantee the gymnast stability and freedom of movement,” “must not produce disturbing sounds,” and “must not cause skin burns.” The surface at the Rio Games was provided by the French company Gymnova. The floor being used at the Olympics is called “Glasgow.” According to Gymnova’s promotional materials, the Glasgow exercise floor has “exceptional bounce and comfort.” The floor’s springs “are designed to provide the highest levels of responsiveness,” while their placement “ensures a consistent rebound across the entire floor area.”

The floor at the 2016 Olympics measures 14-by-14 meters and consists of three layers. The “base layer” consists of “sustainably sourced plywood … over 2,000 optimally positioned springs to provide a consistent response.” Each spring measures 11.3 centimeters in height. The “intermediate layer” is made of “high-density interlocking foam panels giving increased levels of comfort and shock absorption.” The “performance layer”—the carpet at the top—“consists of several strips joined together by hook and loop fastener bands.”

Once everything is assembled, the height of the floor is about 20 centimeters. The retail price of the Glasgow system varies widely, with listings ranging between about $31,000 and $46,000. That price includes the cost of installation but does not include shipping fees. If you’d prefer to install the floor yourself, Gymnova provides detailed assembly instructions. These YouTube videos, which reveal the guts of a modern mat, also show the steps involved in laying down a new gymnastics surface.

From everything she has said in and around these olympics she has basically said "I'm doing this for myself and I wasn't having fun and enjoying it as much as I used to and I wouldn't have quit if this was 4-5 years ago". Thats not someone who has had such a mental breakdown that they can't compete. Thats someone who doesn't want to compete. She was part of a team. You don't let your teammates down by quitting unless you are an utter mess. Shes the best gymnast ever in many peoples eyes. She clearly has the mental fortitude to overcome these things.

They still turn up and get on the pitch and play football. Thats in one of the most toxic environments in sport with 70,000 people watching them at times. Not quite the same as performing in a near empty stadium and deciding to call it a day. I can understand someone who can't handle the pressure and crumbles under it and their performances suffer but not someone who just quits on their teammates mid competition.

Especially when that someone who quits, is still better than the vast majority of their competitiin, even if they themselves are only performing at 70 - 75 % of their full potential.

Also worth noting she is incredibly gifted, and could still have performed perfectly safely without any chance of coming to physical harm, by changing routines slightly, and would almost certainly have still scored enough points to help her team get the gold.

As was clearly obvious on the vault where she changed her routine literally mid flight, and still landed safely, all be it with a big step.

To me the look on her face, when she came back out to supposedly support her teammates, didnt look like someone there to help and support, it clearly looked like a face saying, I really dont want to be here, but im being made to be.

All that to me just showed a spoiled brat, who only thinks of herself and not the team.
If she does go on to compete in individual finals, purely to get individual acclaim and medals, will only cement those thoughts she is purely selfush

Its a ruthless cut throat sport, no chance they stay in good clubs if they fart around for 90 minutes. First they end up on the bench, then they end up in another lower Club

If she did indeed lose where she was in the air then pulling out was the best thing she could do.

She has gone through trauma no one should ever have to suffer. People questioning whether she is making this up need to take a good long look in the mirror, though I doubt it would do any good. She has risen not just to the top but has pushed the boundaries of her sport. That she is now struggling should surprise no one. Its amazing she has done all she has after what happened to her.

Apparently it's now brave and strong to chicken out of your professional obligations. Smh.
Lets just run everyone into the ground. Then we can 'Smh' when something more serious happens and bemoan 'I didn't know, I didn't see that coming'

People used to call it form or ability to perform under pressure and if you couldn't do it then it was just a shame and you get on with it.
Yeh and people used to execute gays, or get on different buses because of the colour of your skin. SO WHAT

We don't know what has happened behind the scenes

To be at the top of your game in any sport you have to be one of the strongest mentally and if that ever leaves you then you probably need to take a step back.

Social media is just a toxic place on both sides.
How you can type so much and just contradict your own posts is an amazing feat.
