Tomb Raider performance

Are people using Keyboard and Mouse with this game or an Xbox 360 pad? What's the better option to use?

Theres about 3% of the game where it would actually play better on a pad - the rest would work absolutely fine on keyboard and mouse but instead is "just about" playable because of developer retardation (no proper strafe moving except when in aimed mode and a few minor things like that break up the fluidity of movement).

Its a totally different story to older tomb raider games where a pad was an advantage - its a lot like batman AA in terms of moving about except lacks the finesse that that game (mostly) had with keyboard and mouse.

Just loaded the game up for the first time. I put the settings at max (everything on) and i got about 5 mins in the game where you have your first puzzle, the game crawled to a slide show.
Ran the benchmark:
min: 9.2
max: 41.5
average: 30.0

My rig:
2560x1440
[email protected]
8gb ram
670 SLI

Surely my rig cant be the problem. Theres no way im lowering the settings, i guess i either wait for a patch/driver or just wait a year or two when i upgrade the graphics cards. This is the third game ive had to put to one side cause i cant play at max settings, farcry 3 and crysis 3 being the other:(

Try changing shadows from Ultra to Normal as there is no noticeable change in quality just a large performance hit. Just stick with Ultimate and 2xSSAA as well. 4xSSAA is pointless at 1440p. Some people (myself included) would even argue that 2xSSAA is pointless at 1440p with FXAA on.

TressFX and SSAA are going to kill performance on your 670s. It's compute based effects and the 600 series lack on this front.

Putting the games to one side because you can't play on max settings is a bit silly lol. I can't run max settings on two overclocked 7950s and my 7950s are even faster than your 670s in Tomb Raider at your resolution.

May sound a bit silly, but i paid a lot of money on a high end system to play my games how they should be. If i didnt care i would just get them on the console.

If your that bothered: you bought the wrong GPU for this game.

Kepler can't handle GPU compute effects.

Well you've wasted money on the games then if you aren't going to play them. 670s aren't suddenly going to become faster than 7950s in this game and as I said even my two can't handle absolute maximum settings. On that mindset you won't play them till you upgrade next generation :D.

Max you need for 2560x1440 is 2x SSAA. Realistically unless you're comparing screenshots of quite acute instances of aliasing you'll struggle to tell the difference between FXAA and SSAA 2x other than the frame rate being better with FXAA at 2560 res.

For Far Cry 3 again, turn MSAA down to 2x and you should be fine. 8x just doesn't make much difference.

Im happy enough to wait, ive got quite the backlog of games to play. I cant remember the game but i believe i bought it on release and didnt play it till i upgraded my graphics card.
Ok ill give 2x SSAA a try, ill see if im happy with it.

Just got off Tomb Raider heres my results:

Max settings (posted already above, unplayable)
Min 9.2
Max 41.5
Average: 30.0

2xSSAA
Min: 29.1
Max: 58.3
Average: 41.6

2xSSAA No TressFX
Min: 41.5
Max: 60.3
Average: 52.7

I have to say 2xSSAA compared to 8xSSAA there is a bit of a difference but not enough to actually bother me:)
Im leaving TressFX on i think, as it felt very playable to me still.

It's 2x and 4x. :)

All about finding a balance of settings at the resolution we game at. Even with 2 cards some games just can't be maxed. Crysis 3 is another.

Not sure if you have already tried them but the 320 beta drivers are up. They are saying they're up to an 18% performance increase for Tomb Raider for the 660. Haven't tried them yet but will in the morning.

Thanks I tried them but it still does it, in fact even more so, it's wierd it only seems to do it when something happens ie just before a cut scene or when you are about to open a box or case, it's quite annoying though.
