Tomb Raider performance

^

Turn off tesselation. Fixed the issue completely for me. Was crashing once every few minutes after the cave section now it hasn't happened once. Also, if you want to use the cool tressfx hair stuff but don't like the performance hit, turn off High Precision to compensate. Big performance gains for a tiny downgrade to shadows/lighting but I think the hair effects more than make up for it.

I can see AMD's reasoning behind the move as they wouldn't want TressFX working better on Nvidia from the off, but it's a poor show when AMD/Nvidia make the dev hold back final builds as we are the losers-not cool, but bottom line, AMD never locked it out so they get a bit of Kudos back.

Crysis 2 had a last minute change to the code resulting in CrossFire being gimped needing a driver code re-write at the time. :(

Nvidia claim they didn't get the code till late, hence the failure. Hopefully they will have it sorted and well done Rankftw for finding a fix. I like the game but I didn't buy 2 Titans to turn the bloody settings down :D

My benchmark

2 x 6950 2GB 900/1325 with unlocked shaders at 1900 x 1200 running ultra everything with full AA

Please keep images to below 1280px or post in spoiler tabs as I have done for you below - Rilot

My aging computer's still holding up ok I guess...

Core i5 750 @ 3.6GHz.
Single GTX 480 @ stock.
1920x1200 resolution.

Settings used below. Had to tone down depth of field and SSAO to normal and the hair effects gave an unbelievable hit (10-15fps!)

On average I'd say I'm getting a steady 40-50fps and it plays nice and fluid. Not bad for a 3 year old card and even older mainboard, cpu etc

I insist that anybody who games in 3D to run the benchmark in 3D...Lara's assets look ermmmm...well see for yourself ;)

Oh Eidos...

We have just made public a new version of the PC version of Tomb Raider, build 1.0.717.1. This patch will be applied by Steam automatically when you next start the game. If your game does not update, please restart the Steam client.

This is a first update that addresses a variety of issues that we either found out about shortly before release or immediately after.

Fixes include:

- Addressed some stability issues on machines that have both Intel and Nvidia graphics hardware.
- Various small UI updates.
- Fix for players being unable to progress related to the boat in the beach area.
- Some fixes for crashes on startup and when selecting Options.
- Some improvements to TressFX hair rendering.
- Fixes for various smaller graphics glitches.
- Fixes related to the benchmark scene and benchmark mode.

While we expect this patch to be an improvement for everyone. If you do have trouble with this patch and prefer to stay on the old version we made a Beta available on Steam, Build716.5, that can be used to switch back to the previous version.

We expect further patches to follow fairly soon, addressing further issues we see being brought up by players, and are actively monitoring these and other forums looking for issues.

*Edit*

We have removed this patch again due to issues people are reporting with their profiles being reported as corrupt after installing the patch. This will be investigated before the patch is put live again.

Hopefully sorted soon.

Nvidia have released a profile update for Tomb Raider that supposedly fixes the crashing problem some users are reporting. Use GeForce Experience or the Nvidia CP to check for updates if you don't receive them automatically.

If you have deleted the Tomb Raider profile then just quickly re-install the driver and check for updates afterwards.

quote "Tomb Raider has just been released but it seems that Nvidia users won't be able to enjoy Crystal Dynamics' title as the final build is seriously bugged for all Nvidia users. According to Nvidia, the final build of Tomb Raider suffers from performance and stability issues even with the latest GeForce Beta drivers:
We are aware of major performance and stability issues with GeForce GPUs running Tomb Raider with maximum settings. Unfortunately, NVIDIA didn’t receive final code until this past weekend which substantially decreased stability, image quality and performance over a build we were previously provided. We are working closely with Crystal Dynamics to address and resolve all game issues as quickly as possible.

In the meantime, we would like to apologize to GeForce users that are not able to have a great experience playing Tomb Raider, as they have come to expect with all of their favorite PC games.

looks like another downer for nvidia, if it's not sli playing up with poor drivers it's something else

I get significant FPS loss with TressFX enabled on a 690. You shouldn't have to start turning settings down / changing driver profiles / playing the game worrying if it will crash instead of enjoying the experience.

I'm just gonna wait till the patches and new drivers are released. It's not worth going through it when both the publishers and Nvidia have admitted it's effectively still pretty much in beta.

I'm running the spec in my Sig and I have dips to 30fps or so in some cutscenes. Normally it is when there are a few people on screen. I have it maxed except only fxaa and no High Precision Something. Usually it runs at 50 to 55fps. Instead of lowering settings to hit 60fps I will just set my monitors refresh to 50Hz and stick vsync on to keep it smooth ;)

It's a little too Unchartedy for my liking. Having said that I've only played the vita uncharted...

Running Ultimate, 1200p, Tressfx on I get:
min/max/avg 27/46/39

The min varies wildly between runs and is bogus, looking at EVGA Precision X reported min is around 33 fps.

Has anyone else noticed the slight visual anomaly with tressfx, the hair doesnt sit on Lara's shoulders, it's like she is encased in an inch thick invisible coating which the hair sits on.

I may wait a while for the problems to be sorted before trying this.

Will clear my backlog starting with Hitman Absolution.

Just about able to be maxed with 7950 CF at 1920*1080 with 60 FPS (although I play on a 120 Hz screen). SMAA 4x more than halves my FPS over FXAA.
