Thought this special was fairly non special to be honest. It had a few lol moments but on the whole it was boring and dull.

Seeing the nuts talk up the conspiracy theories here is much more entertaining.

I wonder how many of the conspiracy theorists on this thread would have even noticed the tiny resemblance of the number plate toward the Falklands, if it wasn't for the media and the ridiculous BNP/Argies kicking up a fuss for the sake of it

It's Top Gear. It's one of the first things you look at on one of their specials. It (or other slogans on the cars) is a recurring theme.

Putting the two episodes end to end, I was disappointed with this year's special, taking out the debate about the registration plate.

The scenery was, once again, jaw dropping. They do pick some amazing locations and then proceed to capture the landscapes with considerable skill and post-production. However, they didn't really do much in that environment - as others have mentioned already it was limited to driving around a couple of fields, a lake bed and a shoreline.

TG have set some pretty high standards over the years (driving to the North Pole was brilliant) but this didn't really scale the same heights for me. The cow had been done before, and even the end objective of setting up a car football game was a repeat and would have been more of the same if they'd have been able to achieve it.

It was one of those specials where ultimately I think I'd have been more interested in a background documentary following the crew and how they'd made it and how they repaired the cars etc than watching the actual special itself.

I was thinking the same as well. It would have been good to see the behind the scenes aspect of it, a bit like on the David Attenborough documentaries.

I thought those veterans were absolutely pathetic though. They asked TG to leave, TG complied but "oh no, you need to leave quicker".

Then when they did that, they set the mob on them anyway.

I'd have them rounded up and prosecuted.

Pretty much this..

Clarkson is a useless oaf, but I see zero justification for the argies actions..

The war was a war, and clearly whilst we are over it, they clearly are not, and judging by the Beagle conflict (the disputed island conflict with Chile), you can see they are just a ridiculously backwards country with an entitlement trait..

The only real reference was H982 FKL which is only relevant to the british since the Argies call them the Malvinas, and it's only a reference to the year the war broke out, not anything more.. If an Argentinian TV show came over with a "1982 MAL" plate, would we raise an angry mob that was unabated by the Police? We lost hundreds of men on a war they started...

It seems the Argies are full of hate and would use almost any excuse to attack the british because they still feel agrieved..
In late 2011, as the 30th anniversary of the war approached, the Argentine government sought to increase pressure on Britain by persuading members of the South American trading bloc Mercosur to close their ports to ships flying the Falklands flag.

In what it described as a "routine" move, early in 2012 the British government dispatched one of its newest destroyers, HMS Dauntless, to the South Atlantic to patrol the Falklands coast.

Buenos Aires responded by formally complaining to the UN that Britain was "militarising" the area.

The Falkland Islands government decided to counter Argentine claims by scheduling a referendum on the status of the islands, saying that it wanted to "send a firm message to Argentina that the islanders want to remain British". In March 2013 the islanders voted almost unanimously in favour of remaining a British overseas territory

Bang on really.

They acted and are always acting like a group of entitlist thugs.

This was probably the worst of the specials TG have done. Way too much acting like idiots and the route planning was clearly done for comic effect which just turned out making it pretty cringey really. Some funny moments, but the best bit was seeing the argies make a total bunch of vjj's out of themselves.

You are just focusing on a minority and think that represents the whole country because the media tells you thats how it is. I spent 6 months on a UN peacekeeping tour in Cyprus working with many nations one of which happens to be Argentinians. Really nice guys and they don't have any problem working alongside British troops. They will even discuss the Falklands issue with you if you ask and don't get heated up about it.

Whether it was "staged" or "intentional" or not with the whole numberplate thing, unfortunately it overshadowed what was an otherwise enjoyable episode IMO.

I was thoroughly impressed with that Lotus - not only does it still look fantastic, it coped with some terrain that I'd never have imagined it could (there was some stuff it went over that I would have thought twice about taking my Legnum over)

It was also the most reliable of all of them, and for once, they didn't ruin it with their "tinkering" - leaving it alone and simply fitting a towbar was the best thing possible to do with it.

It also needs to be remembered that there is a general election over there soon in a country where the economy is in considerable trouble. So naturally De Kitchen or whatever her name is will try and deflect attention away, and she loves to stir up the Falklands as a tool for this.

I expect after said elections it'll all die down.

I couldn't believe how good the lotus was. makes me want one.

And I've been browsing (at being shocked) at the prices of 928's all week

ITT: The loosest usage of the words "conspiracy theory" in history.

Don't worry TG fans you don't have to resort to name calling to keep your favourite show on the air :p

Wasn't the same tactic one of the reasons for a Falklands war in the first place?

I enjoy TG for what it is but with the exception of some shots of stunning scenery I thought the entire special was really poor and struggling to find something to do, even the India special had more going for it.

I know we all know it's not really "3 blokes in cars and a go pro camera" but the 31 crew, a dozen vehicles and 4 tons of equipment they mentioned really kills any pretence stone dead for the future. To be fair I think they've managed pretty much anything they could do for the special in this format - even the comedy "oh lets turn off the clearly marked road and drive across a swamp for no apparent reason" is wearing a little thin.

Looking forward to the normal format shows return though, puerile and silly is good fun, just drop the pretence of "we're 3 blokes on our own in the wilderness".

It is the original plate for the car.

They also used a second set of plates though, H1 VAE, which is licensed to a 2006 white Porsche.

The H1 VAE was never technically used, it's just that plate was hidden under the rear one from when the Porsche had that private plate in the 90's, and when the offensive plate was removed it became exposed.

I personally do not see why H 982 FLK would be classed as offensive to anyone, or why they would even care.

I wouldn't have even noticed if it wasn't for all the attention it has got. Can't see what all the fuss is about.

Don't worry you're in the majority.

Indeed, it's actually quite sad that so many can believe something so absurd, especially when presented with overwhelming evidence to the contrary, I always thought this forum was better :(
