I enjoy the funny ones like that! and the serious ones. It's when they try to strike a middle ground and sometimes just miss the mark is when I'm not happy.

But that was great from a fun point of view, Not Laughed that hard in a while :D

Can anyone remember the stopping distances bit from yesterdays or last weeks episode?

The highway code 70mph stopping distance of 315ft = 69ft thinking + 246ft braking.

Just wondering what the results from the show were.

Found an old version online though using 1996 cars and a less-fat Clarkson!
  • Lexus GS braking = 139ft (208ft total, assuming the thinking distance is the same as the 1960s)
  • Peugeot 106 GTi braking = 162ft (231ft total)
  • Porsche 911 braking = 170ft (239ft total)
  • Ford Escort braking = 198ft (267ft total)
  • Land Rover Discovery braking = 224ft (293ft total)
  • Anglia braking = 244ft (313ft total) - only 2feet away from the highway code results!

Wow, I knew the brakes were superb on my GS, but 139ft is phenominal even today!
I'll say this though, 'kin useless on snow/ice, the ABS goes into meltdown, the pedal turns to granite and the car doesn't brake at all, it's really quite alarming.

They were from 60mph.

BMW = 75ft

They didn't give reading for other cars.

but then we don't all drive cars with naughty high performance brakes lol. Still highway code is well outdated.

Interestingly in this months Evo they do a comparison between the carbon-ceramic and steel brakes on an F-Type over 20 stops. The only real advantage the carbon-ceramics have is in reducing the unsprung mass as the stopping distances were virtually identical (in fact the steels had a slightly shorter average stop) until the brakes started to fade. This wasn't until the 11th stop so very unlikely to happen on the road.

Unfortunately this business with stopping distances is just speculation. Also the link between safe speed and stopping distances is no more than related - the gov aren't saying the speed limit is one in which you can stop in x feet, they're just saying this is how many feet it may take you to stop from this speed.

Speed is an easy option to 'police' since all it needs is sticking up a camera on a pole anywhere you fancy, cheaper than a police officer for a year and it can work round the clock to earn the money back. Everything else is less cost-'effective' (in terms of publicity).

That a bog standard Vauxhall Insignia can stop from 112mph in the same distance the Highway Code suggests it needs to be able to stop from 70mph is great but ultimately not going to produce any results in terms of raising the motorway speed limit to e.g. 80mph.

Really enjoyed that last episode, i hate when they do specials but i dont mind them at all when they are actually entertaining as i love a good laugh at the guys doing funny stuff.

How ever i just wish it would go back to doing what got it so popular in the first place and that was the really good car reviews they would do mixed in with the odd special.

Pity they have completely sold out and catered to the casual viewers rather than thehardcore petrol head fans.

Jeremy Clarkson tests the new BMW M4 at the track, before switching to the German manufacturer's hybrid-powered i8 for a trip up the A1 to Whitby, North Yorkshire, where he decides which of the two he would rather take for the drive home. With Land Rover production ceasing in the UK later this year, Richard Hammond pays tribute to the 4x4 by attempting to drive one straight up the side of a dam, while James May puts the Mercedes AMG GT through its paces. Taking to the test track in the Reasonably Priced Car are Will Smith and Margot Robbie, who star in new comedy crime drama Focus.

Wow, the next episode is gonna be sick!

Will Smith and a hot chicka. Awesome.

Will Smith should definitely be a good guest as well a BMW M4 and an I8 :D

Margot Robbie, oh yes please!

IT WAS EPIC!!!

Okay it was a 'Car Program' as they kept saying, but there was a lot 'in studio' but most of it will be cut! as there was a very high rate of swearies!!! :D

Will and Margot were very good!, Will was shocked by Clarkson for most of the interview (muchos swearing!!) the SiaRPB section went on for nearly an hour!!!! :D:D:D

And it was the M3 vs i8 (not the M4!!!) :o

Plus it was the largest audience they've had for all 22 seasons!!! usually they have between 600 and 900 people... there were 1,022 people in the hangar (capacity 1,200 for HSE)

No pics of Will or Margot as they were in and out "NO CAMERAS!!!"

Ah, brings back great memories. And then you spend all of the episode trying to see yourself in the audience.

Really enjoying this season so far. The balance is perfect.
