Torchlight II

Finding the Engineer kind of tough. Playing on Expert level so I expected some challenges, but i'm level 12 and I find myself having to chomp through health potions like they are going out of fashion to keep progressing.

I've generally gone down the first skill tree, most of my points are in the first skill, or the passive that gives increased attack speed/stun % chance. I recently swapped to an ~85 dps 1 hand and shield, but I still find myself dieing too fast.

Is my spec bad, or need better gear? or is this the way it is on Expert?

Any tips welcome to see if I can improve my game a bit here.

For those of you who didn't already know.

Playing on the higher difficulties gives you nothing more than the extra challenge.

Loot, experience etc is the same throughout the difficulties.

I'm not too clued up on the classes yet but from the looks of things it really depends on not only your class buy your specific build. For example I'm using an Outlander who uses akimbo pistols, and I have to say that focus is by far the most important skill followed up by dexterity for my build, which is crazy as the Outlander is the rogue archetype and focus is the equivalent to intelligence.

For you it'll depend on what you want, kill things faster? Survive longer? Or be better at 'zoning/kiting' and 'controlling' mobs?

If you want to kill things faster, I imagine strength and focus should be leveled up pretty equally, possibly with strength taking a little more investment. That is if I'm right assuming focus is the attack speed and stun % increase? I've looked online and can't see what each stat effects for the Engineer.

Survive longer would obviously be focus and vitality, more vitality than focus.

To control I'd say you'll have to pump focus almost exclusively so you can hit things faster, thus increasing your chance to stun along with the actual stun bonus, that way you can isolate dangerous enemies and take your time.

I'm not too sure though, that's all pointless if focus isn't what I think it is for you.

Whats the most "ranger" type class?

Not started playing yet as was waiting for my mate to get his copy sorted.

Outlander, the skills are kinda boring though.

What you mentioned above sounds similar to what I was thinking.
Fast shooting with high crit.

Will that be Focus and Dex?
Probably makes for a bit of a glass cannon tho.

Well Focus for the Outlander increases your 'execute' chance, which so far all I've seen that can execute is dual pistols, it basically shoots both pistols at once for massive damage and crit chance, and yeah dex is mainly for dodge % but the crit is nice aswell, his survival is more down to luck than anything, as I personally rely on dodging rather than actually being capable of taking damage, so sometimes I get blown up, other times I take no damage at all. Every boss so far has one shotted me if I failed to kite properly and the dodge roll didn't go in my favor. :D

As engi, spec into the healing bot as after 5 points it gives you mana as well. Is also useful to give your pet the any spells that you pick up apart from heal self, as I always forget to cast the spells and the pet auto casts them.

Well I have just completed the main storyline and have been offered the end game content now.

Bloody good fun this game! I am now going to see what awaits me at end game.

I'm only low level, but why are builds and high level streamers only using one primary skill? Some 70+ embermage only uses the same spell over and over, and I've seen it in other classes too. Why?

On my Outlander who is level 55 I think now, I do use one main skill as I have heavily specced into that skill, however I will every now and then use a few other skills to get out of situations. I will also use one particular skill when there is a large group together as its more effective.

All that said though, I do see your point. It does seem that I only really use one skill and that is it for 90% of the game.

heres a pro tip: if you use berserker get the war banner skill, at lv 2 its supposed to give you 40 mana over 4 sec (i think) but infact gives 1000 mana instead. you can spam any skill and never go low!

The skills in Torchlight II vanilla are pretty naff sadly, the Engineer and Zerk are the only ones who have interesting movepools. Roll on the mods. :D

Sounds like an exploit to me. ;)

My mate found this while we were doing mapworks today

Hmm Ive been playing around and I actually quite like the bows :/

Played far too much tho goin to sleep now xD

seeing your convo above, I too am now addicted to bow! re stats it seems that strength is the key one for damage regardless of class, i've gone strength and dex for the crits. i guess it depends on what weapons you find, I was using a shotgonne for ages, was struggling a bit then found a bow that at base level was 100 dps higher! i guess the same thing could happen again :D (I'm about lvl 36 or so)

Game is good, But once you hit 100. What's the end game?

Elite mode is more difficult, but provides no extra reward?
