Tower block fire - london

They are, quite literally, death traps. I would hate to live in an old tower block.

In the UK though this is possibly the first major tower block fire in decades (by major I mean spread across more than a few flats).

May have resulted in complacency and some are saying an incorrect response from the fire services at the beginning.

In America all buildings will have a separate fire exit. Even if that needs to be bolted onto the outside of the building.

These tower blocks only have a single stairwell. This will hopefully result in some kind of change.

Oh I'm not saying they go up every week, but if I was living on the 20th floor of one of the surrounding tower blocks this morning I wouldn't be feeling too happy.

I've been inside blocks like that. No sprinklers in most places and not in flats.

Unfortunately they won't be clear of smoke. You don't get automatic ventilation like in modern buildings. People are reporting that stairwell was full of black smoke from 2nd floor onwards.

Aye I should have specified old tower block. Really not designed with fire of this magnitude in mind. Anything above the first few floors and you're putting immense faith in everyone and everything below you.

Hideous. Instantly reminded me of the towers and the incomprehensible images of people jumping.

Like others; I've lived in council estates during the 70's, 80's (Cavendish Mansions and the Brunswick centre) and to be fair Brunswick was superbly designed with multiple walkways and exits but Clerkenwell was a single stairwell in each section and I lived with my mother in the top corner. Although a fire door did exist between the two top flats; they were both served by the same stairwell.

I would never entertain apartment living now.

EDIT - Cavendish, no Clerkenwell.

from the vid on BBC it looks like virtually every single window is lit, no idea what could have caused something like that, except maybe a big build up of gas or fumes from materials/equipment from the renovations someone mentioned?

"Extremely saddening and the worst thing is that it could have been prevented."
don't think you can say that w/ certainty until you know the cause.

Eye witnesses on LBC are saying they believe the cladding was on fire and the residents association had previously raised concerns about it.

Twitter experts already crying terrorism based on some dodgy post from someone claiming that an evacuee said their was petrol on the stairs as they exited building....

They've posted links to other articles it's been going on for years and years.

This is very concerning, serious neglect and failings from the council who own the property, KCTMO who manage the property and dare I say London Fire Brigade. Obviously I'm not privy to any SSRI or Fire Safety checks but if enforcement orders have been made in the past to KCTMO on other properties and this, then they haven't been taken seriously and the punishments haven't been strong enough to warrant changes.

For incidents like this there's always going to be a lot of speculation, probably best to wait a while and get the facts. I mean, the building was still on fire at six am this morning.
