Tower block fire - london

That is absolutely retarded.. surely it's a death sentence to sit in your flat as fires consume the building. Yeah, there might be smoke on the stairwell but I'd rather chance it than wait to die.

Most buildings are designed to contain the fire within the flat it started. It is easier for the Firefighters to get to the fire when there isn't 300 people climbing over each other to get out.

i guess the presumption is for fires that aren't of this magnitude it'll prevent people running into danger and give the fire brigade access to solve the problem.

although it goes without saying in this case, it didn't.

can't beleive the fire alarm didn't go off, potential shoddy cladding aside something that fundamental should have been maintained in good working order, there is no excuse.

It's kinda a sad reflection of the internet in 2017 that my first thought when seeing this in my news feed was "oh god here comes the spam of 9/11 nuts asking why it didn't collapse >.>"

I assume that if the Building was designed properly the fire should not have spread like that and so quickly. The stairways might well have been deathtraps way before your flat would. Something has gone terribly wrong though for the whole building to be engulfed so quickly.

The picture below was taken around 4.00 this morning and by then a lot of the flames had subsided quite a bit
When I first saw it about 45mins earlier the whole other side of the tower had flames lapping up it and there was a helicopter right in the thick of the smoke at the very top of the building looking as if it was going to land, kudos to the blokes just flying that close.
It was horrific even from where I was and I couldn't get that close to it as even then a lot of road closures were in place, not ambulance chasing by the way as I work there. I didn't hear or see any of the reports of residents being stuck in there but no doubt there were lots as considering the amount of apartments there wasn't really that many on the streets, far more police and firefighters etc at that time and it had been going for about 3 hours by then.
My thoughts go out to all involved :(

It is sound advice in most tower fires as the structure and layout should offer good resistance to the spread of the actual fire. If all is working as it should, it would actually be more dangerous to evacuate from relatively safe flat into smoke filled corridors. Looks like in this case something has gone badly wrong with the structure.

It's worth noting that the building was renovated between 2012-2016 and that the fire suppression systems failed a HSE review in 2012. Considering the renovations involved the removal of the asbestos fire protection it's pretty safe to assume that the post renovation building in 2017 differed greatly from the original design. If it turns out that played a part in the deaths you can expect the company responsible to catch hell.

a guy on the news said they had recently refurbished  have done fire prevention work on low rise blocks even the soil pipes have fire collars fitted to stop fire spreading upwards to the flat above fire doors are fitted as standard. summat not been done right here no way a fire should spread that fast in a modern block :( RIP

You have to think of flats as completely self contained spaces really. Now obviously smoke and heat can spread through the concrete through openings, pipework, cabling etc. I imagine questions will be asked about the cladding and windows though.
