Towing more than the braked towing limit

there are plenty of braked dollys out there but a quick google states a dolly is for recovery only not transportation so thats that ruled out

oh and the maximum would be 750kg for an unbraked trailer not as you state 500kg

The manufacturer stated unbraked limit for the car is 500KG.

If you tow an unbraked trailer beyond the design limit of the car, the trailer tries to push you under braking, this lifts the rear of the car and throws you into a jacknife, almost happened to me once, and it is scary as it gets. (almost happened to me when brakes failed on my kart trailer tow a van).

Seriously, don't attempt this, it really isn't worth it.

I thought MikeH had a focus ST?

you know you can't tow on these at all, as they are not rated for tow weight and you can't even get a tow bar fitted to it anyway

This this & this.

Don't be a moron, alas, given who the OP is................

Don't do this.

Once we were travelling on the M56 towing a fair sized braked trailer, a bit smaller than the average horse box with a Jeep Cherokee.

We were escorted to a weigh bridge by Vosa, we were well under, but the point is we did nothing to attract attention to ourselves, not speeding, no bulbs out or anything, it was a random check and it could happen to you.

Oh and also, its a stupid thing to do.

In the past few months I've driven 7k+ miles with a Trailer and for the vast Majority of the time I've had Big Heavy cars on it.

I've never had any issues with the police (except in Germany!) They've sometimes slowed down when I've had something particularly interesting on tow but apart from that they've never shown any interest in the time.

I would hazzard a guess you were not towing said big heavy cars with a Clio....

He won't be using the Clio to tow, they can't tow anyway.

He will be using a ZS180? IIRC.

Don't see the harm in asking the question, usual band wagon jumping on Mike as usual though.

It is very scary. I was once towing a 2500kg trailer with my Isuzu Trooper rated at 3,300kg towing weight and the brakes failed on the trailer and when I braked it sent the trooper and trailer into a spin and I ended up facing the wrong way on the opposite side of the road. Luckily nobody was coming towards me or behind me.

ie. the one set out by the manufacturer.

I'm talking 100-200kg over - not a huge amount. It would also be a rare occurrence.

What are the potential issues?

Is it something that's ever going to be checked, how does someone determine the weight of your trailer and load at the road side?

Because his opening post was pretty much "I know this is illegal and dangerous but do you think I can get away with it?"

Sounds to me like he was asking if the tow weight set my the manufacturer is the legal limit and if its dangerous.

So I think he was asking if it is dangerous? That's how I read it anyway. And as you can see from his response he won't be doing it from advice from this thread.

What does the missus drive? Get her something with a higher towing weight, get the ZS for yourself, and then just swap cars when you need to tow the Clio?

Oh how predictable, is your drum not worn out from all the incessent beating yet? There hasn't been any MikeH bandwagon jumping for absolutely months - he's been remarkably free from boneheaded ideas lately.

I'm sure that has greatly dissapointed you though as I know how desperate you are to fly the 'WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA' flag on behalf of the 'Get offended on behalf of somebody else' squad :D
