Towing more than the braked towing limit

I really wish people wouldn't talk silly business on the internet.

Ok sorry if your car have the capabilitys to tow more weight, obviously that is related to your car. Regardless the maximum towing limit of a unbraked trailer on uk roads is 750kg if your cars up to the job.

That's like saying the maximum is 36T for a braked trailer because that's the maximum you'll see on the road. Some cars might not be able to tow this, obviously that's down to the individual car's limit.

your right on the towing up to 3.5t on a post 97 licence

post 97- you can tow up to a combimbed MAM of 3.5t regardless of combination (obviously as long as your tow vehicle is capable.

36T is not the Max, its FAR higher than that, STGO wide & abnormal loads for example, circa 147 tons.

Granted, for normal, un-escorted work, the majority of UK HGV's are restricted to 44ton. Incidentally, the design combigned weight for my Scania is 60,000kg! - That would be painfully slow with only 440 BHP!

"Category B vehicles may be coupled with a trailer ... over 750kgs MAM provided the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle, and the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes MAM."

So for example with my 1.2T unladen focus, I must only tow a trailer with a MAM of equal or below 1.2T.

According to a very reliable source.

Exceeding the towing capacity of a vehicle could leave the driver open to prosecution under the following:-

Regulation 100 C&U regs 1986

Road traffic act section 40, 41 or 42 with possible penalty points

If overload more than 30% then may consider vehicle/combination being in dangerous conndition

The above would need to be proven in court
