Toyota Yaris GR4 4x4 Rally going into production.....

One of the things that interests me most about this car is the tuning potential. Add to that the fact that the normal/sport/track switch is probably electronically managed, means some potential coding tweaks could give you options to change the power distribution (if you so desired :D)

Pretty sure subaru just announced the next brz will have a non turbo 2.4.

Why couldn't they just fit this engine?

World Rallycross didn't exist when the Impreza WRX was around. WRX is solely associated with Subaru, I've never heard of it being used by anybody else.

WRC is a different matter.

Subaru claimed the name WRX stands for "World Rally eXperimental".

The logo for world rally cross is just RX.

Fair enough. I just use WRX and WRC in similar context, one for the sport, one for the car. Yes rally cross is technically WorldRX but all the competitor numbers are WRX. In any case, I bought YR21 WRC too so I'll see which one I prefer when the car arrives and go with that.

I don't see why a 1.6l wouldn't fit where a 2.4l would, even with the turbo and ancillaries. I would imagine it's more to do with marketing and product segmentation. One being a proper homologation special and the other being marketed as a driver's car where they feel a naturally aspirated, larger capacity, engine is a better fit. I'm not saying the Yaris isn't a driver's car, just that it's being marketed as an out and out homologation special.

And it will likely be one of the last ever cars with a boxer engine, so it will be a nice send-off inside something which isn't a ****** SUV and will be remembered :(

Out of everything that’s come out in recent times. This car has impressed me the most.

Look forward to everyone who gets one and the journey they have with them.

Don’t get the fuss here, it’s a 3 cylinder Yaris with a trick drivetrain that you’re rarely going to play about with on the road. It’s also manual and mediocre on pace. They’re trading on the fascination of a “drivers car”, when in fact it’s totally outdated and will be a chore to drive on the public roads as they are nowadays.

If you want something cheap, sporty, focused as a drivers car then they already sell the GT86. It’s got the lower center of gravity, a better 4 cylinder engine, it’s just as engaging if you have to have a manual and it’s a proper RWD rather than a gimicky selectable setup. The GT looks better as well.

Mediocre pace? It naturally surpasses 200bhp per ton. In gear acceleration is likely to feel rather rapid compared to cars which on paper have more bhp. Any fast, windy, A or B road, of which there are plenty, will let this car shine.

5.5 to 60? Hardly setting the world alight at the price.

Marketing it as a failed rally project is genius to be fair, as evidenced by how people are clamouring over the fact it’ll make them feel like a rally driver. In truth it’s a cheap Toyota 3 cylinder with an inflated price tag.

not sure I get all the hype on this thing either tbh.

Clearly you’re not the target market!

Harris loves it, I imagine it’s more like a honda in terms of enjoyment from tagging it and then the mobility of a short wheel base and all the AWD grips. Old school B road blaster as that 1.6 3 pot has to be more interesting than most.

guess that shows a decent comparison? Civic type R is similar price?

Problem is the way cars can grow on you that interior never will.

This will still be quicker where it matters than a lot of more powerful cars. The fast Audis have a lot of HP but they are lardy and don't corner.

That’s such a strange way to look at it. They’ve basically built a whole new car, which looks a bit like a Yaris, but actually shares almost no parts with a production Yaris, and they’ve built it specifically to compete in WRC. And because there are no economies of scale, they’re charging a bit more. But you don’t see any of that? As I said above, you’re clearly not the target market.

The hype is:

Proper 4WD drivetrain with a bespoke chassis developed for it.
Manual
Boosty 3 Pot
Light (Considering 4WD, modern crash regs)

It literally is an Impreza/EVO for the modern era. No one else is building anything like it. I was too young really to appreciate or even afford the rally cars of a past era so this is my chance.

Don't forget the handbrake that decouples the rear wheels when you pull it!
