Toyota Yaris GR4 4x4 Rally going into production.....

5.5 to 60? Hardly setting the world alight at the price.

Marketing it as a failed rally project is genius to be fair, as evidenced by how people are clamouring over the fact it’ll make them feel like a rally driver. In truth it’s a cheap Toyota 3 cylinder with an inflated price tag.

And a jet fuelled dragster will do 0to100 in 2 seconds, doesn't mean it's good at anything else so what's your point? This is a critically acclaimed wonderful piece of engineering in a time lost to eurobox regulations and plastic. A fantastic all rounder. It's absolutely bang on the money and worthy of the hype.

The problem with all these dual clutch hyper hatches is, they’re not actually fun. They’re designed to basically sit in a Nando’s car park then go up a dual carriageway and back. Snore.

I like this and it will be a welcome change from the usual leased out Golfs and BMWs cluttering the roads. There are lots of things going for this car even with a 3 pot engine. The new Subaru BRZ on the other hand is poor, Subaru had a decade to improve that car and ended up with about 30bhp gains and terrible styling.

All of them I’d say, A45/RS3/Golf R etc. They are rapid don’t get me wrong, but are they fun or sporting to drive? Not in my experience. Hopefully the Yaris is.

Will it be ‘better’ than a Type R?

I agree with the comments about the hype train. It’s effectively another hot hatch, which is great, sure, but there are also other good hot hatches out there.

I’ve not driven a 4WD hot hatch but I’d assume a FWD is more fun, depending on your definition of fun, of course.

How much more is an Alpine?

My preference would always be RWD, 4WD and lastly FWD in performance cars. The Yaris can be switched to 70% rear bias
I don't personally see it as a hot hatch in traditional sense. It's more of a bespoke car albeit with a hatch :D. The BMW M3 is closer to the 3 series than the GR Yaris is to a Yaris I think. Most if not all previous hot hatches are just a standard chassis & body with trick bits added I think.
Alpine, aren't those £48k+?

I tried a 3 pot last year and actually quite liked the sound. The yaris interiors are always naff unfortunately. Bit of a shame really as the Corolla interior I find quite nice. I thought the previous gen Yaris had a horrible interior, and glass areas, preferring the Aygo interior instead.

It's a shame about the piped in sound through the speakers but seems to be the way cars are going. I don't think my MX-5 has that however although it only really good good when being revved out to 4-5k+
