Tracker install with subscription

I said £500 or whatever, there are different options with different costs so I don't know.

You've managed to post some semi useful information, which was the entire reason I created this thread - for information about trackers.

Not for any other reason which you seem to think.

I wonder what a forum would be like if no one ever asks questions about things they don't fully know about or understand.
Come on. You been on here long enough to know the ocuk joke ‘worse thread to …’

for trackers you need the right one. Otherwise you could just chuck a apple airtag in the glovebox. Too much faff.

The app can but only when the car is stationary IIRC. I'm with BMW Insurance and they told me it has to be a Thatcham approved tracker.

Ah ok, in that case then its probably worth doing as the guys above said, change insurance company as the costs would out weight any change in insurance co. and you never know, you might even get a cheaper policy

That's the conclusion I'm coming to.

They have insisted you get one mid term?

BMW Insurance insist on a tracker on any M cars or cars above £75K. My current car is neither.

Seen a couple of videos of the mtrack one where they trashed the car trying to find the tracker before abandoning it - not sure why past a certain point they even still bothered.
My car has one fitted, I have the fobs, but I am not paying for it. The Merc App is fairly decent, it gives me some decent security measures such as zones etc.

i have trackers fitted to my vehicles. £9/month for basic GPS tracking, route logging, etc. I use it to track vehicles and time on site for business purposes. don't know what terms your insurance are looking for or what spec etc, but this question was asked in the first reply to this thread.

Becoming more common. Our work insurance insists on trackers on all cars over £75k. But to be fair to them, we only pay £400 per annum no matter whatever the car is. Our vans cost £750 per year in comparison.

Never made sense to me.

Interesting that BMW’s own insurance company are basically saying that the security that BMW fit at the factory is insufficient.

Yeah cars of that price should have them fitted as standard and not being an optional £500-£700 extra which is a rip off and just nets the dealer more money.

personally im with the if they go to the trouble of taking it they can keep it. i spent many years fitting security and as far as trackers are concerned they are only as good as the back up they receive.
you need a dedicated company who will track and find the vehicle ,not rely on the police to find it.
the police are stretched as it is so chances they will actively be looking all the time for your vehicle is pretty slim.

oh and when the vehicle is located you need to know it is recovered not just a well its parked at such and such seen to many where the vehicle goes walk about again after being located, once had a friend who travelled by train to pick his car up from manchester and arrived to a empty spot, when he contacted the police they said it was there ......not good.

I don’t like trackers as I take the view if the car is nicked then I don’t really want it back. Personal thing, some like the idea of being able to find the car and the crims but I think if they are serious crims the tracker won’t help. My insurer didn’t insist on one.

I always thought like this until I had a car stolen.

The spec it had was pretty much irreplacable and certainly so for the settlement figure.

My last insurance company asked if I had a tracker fitted to my E43 when I had it, so I said no and they said it was required under the policy. I told them Mercedes have an app which tells me where the car is and that was good enough for them as they dont specify what sort of tracker is required. I cant recall if the BMW app can locate your car or not?

Churchill didnt even ask for the E63S

The BMW app is useless, due to data privacy it'll only let you see the location if you're within 0.5km of it and even then, all it takes is one cable disconnected in the boot and it's disabled anyway. It is in no way a substitute for a tracker.

BMW have just told me that they fitted one when the car was new, I’ve asked some questions but it may work out in my favour.

When I picked my E43 up it had Tracker documentation in the glove box so this makes sense.

Some serious lack of fact in this thread. Some insurance companies will insist on a thatcham approved tracker, there are a few brands to choose from.

You need to clarify if they want a category 5 or 7.

Cat 5 is the most expensive, around £500 for the tracking including fitting (must be fitted by them) and expect yearly premiums of about £200. This gives GPS monitoring and also things like remote engine shut off and transponders for your keys to identify whos driving.

Cat 7 is less expensive, around £200 for the tracking including fitting again. Yearly subscription will be less, around £120-150. This is the same basic GPS but can be set to alert you via text /email etc if the car moves without the ignition on or if the battery is disconnected.

If the car gets stolen you have to call the police, get a crime number then call the tracker people and let them have that number then they can work with the police to find the car.

I have just had to have a cat 5 fitted to my car as the insurance insisted on it, but then I have an agreed value of £100k on my car.

I went with a Scorpion tracker as they had the cheapest annual fee.

All it says on the website is:

Is the car fitted with a tracker?
Any vehicle valued in excess of £75,000 or any M Series vehicle must be fitted with a Thatcham approved tracking device with an active subscription. If you have arranged for installation of a Thatcham approved tracking device with an active subscription within 14 days of the start of this policy, or you already have this in place, you can answer yes. Please note, failure to comply with this requirement may result in all or part of a claim not being paid. You may be required to provide us with a copy of your certificate of installation.

The car currently has a cat 7 tracker installed.
