Trading the stockmarket (NO Referrals)

I do wonder if this is the start of a big downturn in the markets driven by recession. The UK had unexpected contraction today. The lights are blinking red for all economies. I think it will be short and sharp so could be a good time to get back into the market later this year.

Not an unexpected downturn is it. We all know there's a global recession started.

Tbh I missed out cashing in on the last major drop as I needed my funds for a house purchase, so I'm quite content to fill my boots with my watchlist companies this time round while I have the spare money to put away.

I am prepared for this to turn into a major rout and full panic, but as I've said before, I think the year is going to be up and down like a yo-yo and overall somewhat down at the end of the year.

Crypto is about to melt down which is probably going to drag the wider tech market down with it in the short term.

Definitely not unexpected. Probably the most predictable one there has been. Many have been calling it since last year. I cleared my shares out last Autumn (mentioned in this thread). Even then it always seems to catch people out and cause a panic.

Definitely not looking at my EZJ holding! :D Down 60%. Staggering.

The rest of the funds, I'm just going to ignore... and hope I don't need the cash in the next 5 years...

Edit , lots of green today Jerome Powell fed ,at 19.30 bst so either news that's already priced in or good or bad ,time will tell (my point being it's a catalyst that may move things)

If I make regular contributions to a couple of Vanguard Life Strategy funds, can I also make contributions to a cash ISA with my bank? I'm not clear on whether cash held in Vanguard is considered a cash ISA or is it only the investment fund balances that are considered (stocks and shares) ISA with Vanguard?

If you need the cash, its quite justified in liquidity terms but not investment. I always try to argue to reduce a mortgage in market good times for that kind of reasoning, it improves your cashflow and security during any lows; inversely it equates to interest probably far higher then savings pay nowadays..

Try look at regular savings, they pay something decent eventually but it often dont allow large amounts. Also some banks have nicer deals on current accounts then savings, depends on terms. I miss saving @10% when I was a kid :p moneysavingexpert forum

Center of the universe today is this dude with a nice tie. We might revert to capitalism one day would be nice.
Relief rally I presume

I put another 3x on tesla today. Will Probably close that out tomorrow. Hoping for 20 percent return. That's twice in a row.
All Other stocks are pretty much red month on month.

Looks like USA stocks are up due to.
... A possible 0.75 rate hike!

Yea, this is the reason. I want to store some liquid, quick access funds. I'm not bothered about yield.

I think I'll just store in a normal savings account, just to be on the safe side.

I *think* you can pay into multiple but only open one account per year. So if your S&S ISA was opened prior to this year you’d be fine to open up a cash one and top that up.

However if you opened the S&S one this year you couldn’t then also open up a cash one.

Well, I know I'm terrible at ignoring red numbers, but I also can't just keep eating these losses. I think it'll continue to struggle until the fuel situation is sorted out. So I'm selling up and paying off the mortgage, and I'll probably trickle back in over time.

It's total carnage today ,this needs a while for the dust to settle, unless you feel this is the bottom (I've given up speculating tbh) Argo Blockchain caught my interest at 55p look at them now 31p

Yeah I regret not selling up a month ago. I've set a red line and think I'll basically just not look. Everything seems to be a trap at the moment. Can't see it ending.

So I've set stop losses on everything and if they trigger I'm not going back in with that

Heavy losses in 2022 for me overall.

To the extent that my gains since covid are much diluted.

Definitely questioning more and more to just pay off the mortgage. With the effort and time spent on finance I'm not sure if it's really worth it.

Even moving more into the big, slow, 'safe' stocks isn't doing me any favours.

Luckily for the money I have in I have ten years before I intend to touch it, hopefully things look better by then!
I am starting to question putting cash in every month though just to see it evaporate, even though the accepted wisdom seems to be just keep DCA'ing regardless.
Really, really, trying not to keep looking at nothing but a downward spiral.

Similar thoughts. I, too, regret not bailing out several months ago. Only difference for me is I've already paid off my mortgage and don't have any debts. Not sure what to do ... don't think we've hit the bottom yet. Will probably follow your advice and just not look until 2023 !
