Train and railways passion...

Never really been one for trains but I must admit the old steam powered stuff does make me smile. In fact I love anything gigantic and steam-powered. I always really enjoy those programmes on discovery about that sort of stuff (Chris Barrie did one IIRC). :D

Mmm show your appreciation to the Tube

I have travelled on trains and metro systems in various countries in the world and despite all the whinging, moaning and crying here in the UK I'd rate the rail service in the UK higher than that in any other country I've used the railways in - taking into account a combination of various factors including fares and quality of rolling stock.

I guess its just more fashionable to have unacceptably high standards, rose tinted glasses and whinge lots.

I'm not going to argue it's as good as Switzerland because it isnt but then what do you expect, Switzerland has a GDP per capita far higher than us, its no wonder they can spend the money required to have a near flawless rail system. If we did that you'd get a bunch of people having a moan about how its a waste of taxpayers money and it should go on a Hospital/Lower tax/Roads/A goat/Something else.

Then I've no idea what you are on about as clearly you are not one of the people I was addressing in my post

Mind you, you do rather bizarrely 'hate' something and then go on to say you 'simply prefer' other forms of transport. I guess thats the same mentality that means you must 'hate' Apple if you 'prefer' blackberry.

Fair enough.

I think I'm within right and reason to hate something and thus prefer doing an alternative.

*As a side note, I don't actually hate all trains and rail stuff. I was perhaps a bit hasty with that. Old steam trains are awesome, as are the 200mph bullet trains, fantastic engineering. The 07:35 from East Croydon, on a week old travelcard that has disintegrated in your pocket and doesn't work through the barriers anymore, coupled with freezing temperatures, overcrowding, armpits and bad breath, now that's hatred. ;)

.

I love love London transport. But Perth blew it out the water. But they have plenty of land, tax revune by the huge WA mining sector.
Cleaner, newer, brilliant service and cheap as chips.

Whereas by contrast public transport in Sydney was absolutely dire. They didnt even have a proper metro system. I ended up walking from the hostel to the car hire place in the end :D

Surpisd by that. But then it's a huge country and Perth must be a lot newer. Went from centre to 70km south on a day pass. Imagine London underground, overground and buses within a 70km radius of London.

Irrelevent though as Perth is an isolated and spread out city. 70km there and 70km here are quite different. Perth is the most isolated city in the world - its closer to Singapore than it is to its own countries capital city.

I've always thought London's trains do pretty well given the enormous volume of people they move. I've no idea how it compares to other giant city systems though.

I used to follow these beasts up and down the country. I was on it's last scheduled route from KingsX 55015 - Tulyar and ended up on the evening news. i was in the background helding me marmite sandwich :D Jan 81 ?? i was about 13?

Never really regreted following trains. Got me out and about travelling at a young age.. Which was then more than kids do today.
