Train Simulator 2021 Upgrades?

Update:

All sorted now, I removed the other panel on the case and the 2 x power leads were folded and tucked up out the way behind it. I have installed the card, connected the power, downloaded the drivers and it is working a treat. I have only had a quick play with the settings in Train Simulator however my frame rates have gone from 24ps to 49ps which is more than double.

I suspect I can improve on these numbers even more once I upgrade the CPU and add a bit more RAM so all looking good.

Many thanks for all your help and advice guys, as always very much appreciated.

Your welcome and Great news.

It may be better to get a new cpu, motherboard and memory bundle in the future depending on funds because those old cpu like what you have arnt the best for pushing graphics card .

Enjoy.

Thanks Mick, exactly my thoughts, I have not given up on my son's offer so I will wait and see if his PC contains anything worth having, or maybe I can install my new graphics card, PSU & SSD in his case retaining his MB & CPU but until he gives me the specs I will not know. Either way I am in a better place.

That is a pretty solid result. With some overclocking of the CPU and graphics card you might be able to turn on the eye candy and hold that frame rate.

With the A8-7600.

I have to be honest jigger and say I never considered over clocking, I know it’s the name of the site but I come on here for the excellent advice.

I have never attempted anything that advanced with a PC but that’s not to say I won’t give it a try.

How would a newbie like me go about it?

I haven’t used a FM2 system for a while so might be a little ropey. IIRC that is multiplier locked so you have increase the Front Side Bus speed.

On FM2 the bus speed is 100mhz so to get the CPU clock frequency you times the CPU multiplier by the FSB.
35x100 would be 3.5Ghz. 35x105 3.675Ghz and so on.

That chip might also have CPU boost multiplier for a base and boost clock. That is usually a few steps higher.

Id go into the BIOS and increase the FSB speed by say 3mhz per step and see what the system will run at.

Once it becomes unstable you can either back off the overclocking a little or increase the CPU and/or the memory voltage a little. You need to take note of the CPU temperature particularly if increasing the voltage. Tools like Core Temp and CPUZ are useful for monitoring.
Kavari is a pretty robust chip, but care needs to be taken when adjusting voltages. I wouldn’t go much over plus 10% on the voltage.

Do you have 1x 8gb stick of memory or 2x 4gb ?

Having 2 sticks so the motherboard will run in dual channel can have a performance boost between 20% to 30%. depending on game.

That was kind of my next move mick so thanks for chipping in. I am getting the feeling that my MB is good enough for what I need so I was going to double the RAM, upgrade the graphics card (which I have done) and then if I can still improve things upgrade the CPU.

Thanks again jigger, this did not go entirely over my head but I am miles away from understanding it enough to have a go.

I will watch the video and read loads on here and see where it takes me.

Quick update from this end.

I have given up waiting for any freebies from my son, especially as he is very busy with his job so I have splashed a bit of cash making my rig look like this.

Hard Drive: 250gb SSD with 200gb usable space (This is new and less than 10 months old)
PSU:
Seasonic, Focus GX, 650w, 80 plus Gold fully modular (Brand new)
Graphics Card: GTX 970 (just purchased, used)
RAM: 16gb Team Vulcan Z T-Force 16gb (2 x 8gb) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200mhz, Duel Channel (Brand new)

Which still leaves my existing parts as follows:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-F2A78M-HD2, 10 complete cores, 4C + 6G, 3.1GHz
CPU: AMD A8-7600 Radeon R7

I don't think it is worth me buying anything above Intel I5 or Ryzen 5600 X and it seems I would be silly buying a new CPU until Alderlake is released in a couple of weeks.

Any thoughts?

A520 DH3 motherboard and a 5600G isn’t a bad place to be. A Ryzen 1600AF and 3600X are also very solid chips for the money.

Depends what you want to spend really.
