Train Simulator 2021 Upgrades?

Ooh that's a good find, hadn't realised that place would have such relatively reasonable prices on old gpus and do a 24 month warranty! Having a warranty does make the prospect of an older card much more attractive.

TS2021 is loves a cpu with plenty of grunt as it's mostly single threaded but you will need a decent gpu as well for a good experience and a GTX1030 just isn't enough. I have over 1600 hours in TS2021 and even with my pc (spec in siggy) certain routes still drop to 25fps in places at my res of 2560x1440 with details maxxed out. You can turn the details down but you need to be careful with this game because as you lower the details things will disappear from the game, even vital things like platforms, bridges and scenery so make sure you buy components with enough grunt. As Jigger suggested, try the gpu upgrade first because it should make a huge difference over a GT730 then you can upgrade the rest when the new cpu's launch. Personally I wouldn't go below a GTX970 so the guys are pointing you in the right direction.

Morning all,

I have managed to locate the pre used GTX970's with a warranty so all good there. This may seem a dumb question but I am out of my depth with graphic cards so can I just confirm.

Will any GTX970 card fit my motherboard which is a Gigabyte GA-F2A78M-HD2 or do I need to by a Gigabyte GTX970?

Good news .

You dont need a new motherboard yours had a pci express slot for the gpu .

What case do you have as you need to make sure the 970 isnt to long, the palit 970 is 247mm in length.

Thanks for confirming the MB question Mick, the case is large but I will switch off, open it and have a measure inside. I am confident there will be enough room but will double check.

Ok .

You already have a gt 730 so it jis6t a case of swapping that over to the 970 and adding a power cable to the gpu.

Uninstall nvidia drivers, turn off pc disconect power cable from wall, install new 970 with power cable, start up and install latest nvidia drivers. I dont bother with GeForce experience.

Hi Mick,

Not at the moment, had a development last weekend. Went up to visit our son on Sunday and during the conversation I mentioned upgrading my PC. He replied by saying I could have his gaming PC as he has a PS4 now and doesn’t use the PC.

It was packed away so he is going to dig it out and let me know the specs. It’s 3 years old but I seem to recall it was a bit tasty when he bought it so I will wait and see.

It may be a case where I just have the entire PC, however worst case I might take some of the parts which hopefully will include a half decent graphics card.

Thanks for asking, I will post an update once I know what’s on offer.

Afternoon chaps,

It seems my son is having second thoughts about giving me his PC so rather than wait about I have dived in and bought myself a used EVGA, GEFORCE, GTX970 Graphics card. I have been having a go at installing it this afternoon and it fits a treat however I am now stumped re the power connections.

The GTX has 2 x power inputs on it, 1 x 8 pin and 1 x 6 pin. Having Googled the subject it seems both need to be connected for the card to function, the card came with 2 x leads with various ends on them however if I put the 8 & 6 pin correct ends in the card what I am left with still does not match anything on my MB or spare in the cabinet?

Do I need to bite the bullet here and upgrade my MB as suggested by some above or are there aftermarket connectors out there to get me out of trouble.

Thanks in advance

the gpu will be powered by the psu, not the motherboard..the leads should go from the back of the psu directly into the gpu. (Nothing to do with the motherboard:))

Your psu will have a few 6+2 pin connectors, probably tucked out of the way if they were not used previously or in it's box if it is a modular psu. You need to fit a 6+2 pin lead to the 8 pin socket on the gpu and just the 6 pin part of the lead (just tuck or cable tie the +2 pin part out of the way) to the 6 pin socket.

That's a big upgrade from a GT730 and you will be able to turn the detail sliders up a lot. That cpu is probably going to hold things back but I would hold off on upgrading the cpu/motherboard/memory for now until AMD and Intel have launched their new cpu's and sockets. Even if you don't want to buy the new cpu's you should be able to get a good deal on a current bundle from people who are upgrading.

Thanks Craig,

I noticed a lot if not all the new mother boards have a couple of sockets on them matching what I need so I wrongly assumed I could use these and draw the power via the MB. I will will have a hunt around in the cabinet to see if any spare sockets have been tucked away if not I might need to look at a modular PSU.

Cheers Pasty,

Yes I appreciate the upgrade and hopefully it will go some way to improving FPS and picture quality however as you say I might/will need to upgrade the CPU at some stage. I cannot remember who said it above, it may have been you but the suggestion was start with the graphics card and build from there.

i play that game and it isnt greatly optimised, dont think any of them are, but you would need better than a gt 730 to run it better. i used a 710 and was just ok. ran great with an rx 560x and while my current laptop isnt a gaming one it does have pretty decent graphics from the 4700u apu it has for gaming and the train sim, not as good as the 560x, but its not dedicated.

i3 or i5 10th gen with and rx 570 minimum.
