Transformers 4

How old are most of you? Reason I ask is, how can so many of you appear to remember the cartoons so well? I used to burn the backsides out of the VHS tapes from the 80s that they became warped and can barely remember much of the cartoons to this day. I have vague memories of the characters but can barely remember most of the stories.

Same with the paperback books. Read tons of them and if I remember correctly there were colouring books.

I'm 33 in two weeks time.

I watch the orginal cartoon film every so often and remember fondly playing with the old toys.

I don't remember the cartoon lots, but I do remember the books I read.

I had a couple of books that had cassette tapes that you could listen to the story on, sound effects and all on them :)

Damn! I forgot about those as well. Walk through books. They were great in the 80s. Used to always listen to them before sleep.

I'm 29 next month so grew up with the later series, 3 and 4. However they were still showing earlier ones when I was young.
I actually got MORE into Transformers in my 20s to be honest when I watched the cartoon for a laugh after picking up the box set. My wife ended up loving it and thus I got more into it and read a lot of the comics etc too.

As a kid, it was more about the toys for me.

I hate the Bay movies, BUT sometimes I think people forget how lazy the 80s cartoon was. The art work was terrible (compare it to Gundam 79 which just puts it to shame and is much older). The colouring was lazy as hell, multiple times they talk about a transformer who isn't there, yet they are standing next to them on screen!!! Or there are 3 starscreams at once instead of skywarp and thundercracker.

I tihnk what it DOES have in spades though is charm, and interesting characters and that is what it's all about.

My biggest complaint over al lthe crap in the Bay movies is that the Decepticons are portrayed as mindless Monsters. Megatron is infact very respectful of Prime, and he fights for a cause he truly believes in - corruption in the government where they opress the lower class. Prime believes in the system, Megatron fights against it.

Anyway...still managed to avoid seeing this movie! I'm proud of myself!

Original Transformers were awesome. Especially the movie and soundtrack, the toys which had stats and the badge you could rub to show decepticon or autobot emblem.
Transformers and He-man were my childhood :D

BTW antone remember the go bots?

A solid 6/10 for me.

No coherent story, terrible acting, clingeworthy product placements - especially if you can read the Chinese ones.
Great effects though.

For so much happening in a movie I was never so bored in my life, utterly utterly terrible.
What on earth have they done to Optimus, I wouldn't have him as a leader, every time getting his ass handed to him so easily.

Same as the first movie fight with megatron, he's being tossed about like a wet sock for all of it, Megatron gets killed by the cube and optimus says "you left me no choice brother" like he done him in single handed. Then in the second movie Prime is somehow taking on 3 or so transformers at a time and kicking ass. Primes gun which in the first movie done next to nothing to megatron in the second sends him flying 30 feet and crashing through a wall.

The whole middle section on Lockdowns ship needed to be cut. That would help the movie in many many ways.

I still can't break the link I have with the original characters. The key word being characters. The ones from my childhood had more than one line to say, and we're not just stereotypical.

And prime doesn't kill!

We bit the bullet and seen it on Tuesday.

Overall, it had less cringe worthy moments than the previous 3 movies...but didn't have any more 'good' moments. So it was less crap, but still crap. lol

However, I seen more potential here and the biggest let down of all was the lack of actual Transformers characters.
The design of the ones used was awful to say the least. The autobots were just silly stereotypes with no depth at all.

They used Crosshairs - who has my favourite line from the G1 cartoon ever.

They changed him completely and made him bright green with an emerald weapon like look to his cape like thing...whatever that was. Why use names when it has no relevance to the original. weird.

Galvatron was a total missed opportunity. No decepticons even in the film which was lazy - just generic 'toys' the humans created.
You could tell they couldn't be bothered to try.

Lockdown was the best thing about it - by some margin. He saved a lot of the film for me but wasn't in enough.

We came away thinking that it could have been a lot worse, but there were no improvements other than having less irritating human characters.
