TRESSFX: A NEW FRONTIER OF REALISM IN PC GAMING

So the bottom line is, it's a old idea brought up to date with new directX 11 compute ability, nicely done AMD.
hopefully it isn't going to be a one hit wonder with Tomb Raider, it will be interesting to see how AMD progress this to the next step.

it's probably a very old idea, which nvidia effectively had a prototype of. amd's actually made a functional/practical product out of it. the amd one talks about translucency and hair getting heavy when moist, so there's probably quite a few new things in it too.

I think nvidia just didnt push the idea with any of the top game developers, alice madness returns uses it with physx but because it's not a major title it wasn't really noticed. By the sounds of it this will run well on nvidia and amd. I'll be playing the new Tomb Raider so I'll test it out on my 680.

To be fair, it sounds like something that'll wow you in the first hour then you probably won't notice it.

Once you go for frist exposure is one thing the next is when you go and play a game that dosnt have it then you notice it everywhere.
I play using 3 screens, tried one screen lately but my brain goes I cant see and I loose immersion.

AMD seems to step up a bit lately with drivers and gaming evolved, and a good way to go.
If Dirt is any indication this might happen,

Sounds like its a discrete feature in its own right with its own geometry and shader programs and not really comparable to PhysX implementations (which lack the shader/material pass) and uses a generic physics routine rather than a specific solver.

I understand your point but losing 2 screens is a little bit different to some hair effects :D.

Exactly, you also have to consider these hair effects probably won't be widely available in most games for a few years to come yet. Also most characters I play in games have short hair, are bald or have some kind of headgear on such as a helmet lol :p

wellll... you have to wonder why so many games have bald or short haired or helmeted characters. can't be because hair in today's games looks like crap, can it? :p

yep however gaming got to go further than pixel blocky graphics.:D
I find hair with wind on flags and such to add stuff and even if its covered with a helmet, it helps.
real physics with a lot more isnt viable for a good time yet.

real time simulation is a good step and used effectively adds a lot to the immerson. always bother me when trees never move.

I'm sure it can be implemented in other ways thought and not just hair.

Yea an i wonder why that is? Oh yea because hair looked so crap so they cover it up in most games.

http://www.geforce.com/games-applications/pc-applications/fermi-hair-demo/videos

It was available on the 4 series back in 2010. Shame it never got used because that looks awesomes.

problem with that video is the hair looks CRAP
Its got to much volume, it moves incorrectly and just looks like that person was underwater but also not.
Nvidia never made progress because people saw it and said.. You know what? It uses to much resources and look like a dogs steaming like of poo. (60 fps for a Single head of hair PMSL)

AMD have made a MUCH better version that will work wonders on the Cores thet they made, Such a shame Nvidia spent to long messing with crap like Physx

LOL, here we go again, no I don't believe they covered it up because it looks crap. Most male characters in action games and shooters and what not don't have long hair, you can even look at the movie industry for that. Also saying the nvidia video looks crap compared to the AMD version is just nonsense, it looks exactly the same to me, and I bet if the hair colour was the same as Lara Crofts you wouldn't notice a difference.
