Trick or treaters

47 posts until we got to the 'OMG HALLAWEN AMERICAN THING'. Like most interesting things, it isn't British. I'm impressed it took so long. I wonder if we'll get a GBeebies article?

Usually like American stuff, McDonald's, burger king, KFC

In seriousness though, it has become more prevalent over the years, when I was younger Halloween wasn't really a thing in the UK certainly where I grew up at least, we used to do something fun as a family like watch a Halloween based film, and make ghost stories, and mum would always knock up a special dinner, houses weren't really decorated at most be a pumpkin carved outside or a fake light up one in the window, but very few people knocked at the door, and only very few kids would talk about trick or treating at school.

There's no denying the influence of America on Halloween as it is in the UK now, and shops have seized the opportunity to make more money.

I don't begrudge it, I just don't like the whole premise of dressing up and knocking on strangers doors.

I love Xmas though, and I don't care about the commercialisation of it all, I don't see the commercialisation as any worse than when I was younger, and imo the outside influence of Germany and other countries taking an uptick in british xmas has been a positive, if anything I feel society is diluting Xmas, it's becoming less and less about spending time with friends and family and more about making a buck, and businesses see it as a hindrance these days rather than a gift to employees.

Maybe had about 5 or 6 knocks all way before 8pm then had a couple of older kids going about the estate who weren't from the estate (apparently) absolutely hammering the door and ringing the doorbell non stop at 9.15pm. Other neighbours put on the estate FB group that they were going round smashing people's pumpkins and damaging decorations. Basically ruining what had been a good night.

Agreed, thought it was dying out but it’s been mental this year. Had to make a shop run as I’d ran out of Haribo!

My favourite night of the year so glad to see it make a come back.

Damn man. I guess even 10k a month you live in a dump

Had quite a few, seems people drive to our estate to trick or treat with friends. A bunch of 8 year olds came dressed as witches, last one grabs her sweets and says "Happy Halloween, I love how clean and white your house is!" was taken aback and not expecting a child to compliment me on my hallway

Haha funny you say that - I had one girl say "I love your house". I assumed she meant the Hue bulbs that were flickering in the porch but it made my 2 year refurb project all worth it :D

Not a good thing to say during black history month :p

it isn't British
TBF Samhain, (pronounced female pig"sow aine" is a celtic celebration, and if not for france, and part of portugal/ spain we're talking an england/ireland, scotland and wales celtic tradition. it's pagan new year, with scary bits, I think that centuries ago, when it's autum, the leaves are turning orange, and we're burning all the old bones, on the bone fire, and older people are scaring the kids, those times must have been really spooky for kids old bones, scary time of year, and spooky stories wooo

Tonight has been insane for trick or treaters. We must have had about 30 knocks in the last couple of hours. Already gone through £25 worth of sweets and still getting knocks. I’ve never known it to be like this, it seems to be getting busier each year.

What’s your area been like for it tonight?
Same here lots of noise in town the whole street had kids in costume up and down it and lots of adults out on the razzle as well definitely the most I've ever seen it

maybe , before I moved here I spent 15 years in a place where zero trick or treating happened.
Didn't used to be its a recent phenomenon well anytime in the last 30+ years at anyrate wasn't a thing in australia last time I heard

There is a tradition of knocking and begging for money though used to be around November 5th instead there would be the Guy Fawkes effigy which you'd tow it around in a kart was pretty half hearted though not like the intense halloween stuff that happens now. Seems like a different world now which it was in all honesty
