With the impending release of Windows 7, there's the promise by manufacturers of firmware updates for their SSD to support the TRIM command.

For me personally, I'm waiting for this update before purchasing an SSD.

What is TRIM?
The TRIM command allows an operating system to tell a solid-state drive (or "SSD") which data blocks are no longer in use, such as those left by deleted files. An OS operation such as delete generally only means the data blocks involved are flagged as not in use. TRIM allows the OS to pass this information on down to the SSD controller, which otherwise would not know it could trash those blocks.

The purpose of the instruction is to maintain the speed of the SSD throughout its lifespan, avoiding the slowdown that early models encountered once all of the cells had been written to once

May as well keep the information in one place, as currently its scattered about various threads.

Here's what we know so far:

Intel: (fixed firmware)

Crucial:

The download page as been updated but the link doesn't work yet.[/QUOTE]

OCZ:
Regular Vertex and Vertex EX also AGILITY and Agility EX updater ISO's...Turbo will come a little later be patient.

1.4 has TRIM and will suit win7 and any OS with TRIM support.
1.41 has GC and will suit any OS with no TRIM support or raid arrays. http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63498

GSKill:

As always with Firmware updates, use caution and follow the manufacturers instructions as directed. Use at your own risk.

TRIM won't work without all 3 components supporting it.

You can monitor firmware updates all day long, but if the drivers for your controller aren't available then the firmware support is useless.

Some SSD's already have garbage collection in their firmware.
My Sammy does as its a recent model with the relevant firmware.

Older Sammy's and Corsair's need not worry - a firmware update proggy is being released via Samsung post Windows 7 go-live.

NDA's prevent most of the manufacturer's from confirming this until Win7 release date, hence they aint been tripping over themselves to allay owner's fear's.

The Intel chipset doesn't support TRIM if you are in AHCI or RAID mode yet, only IDE. We need to wait for updated Intel drivers as well as the SSD firmware.

This is going to be my problem! Will shortly have 2x 30GB Vertex drives and was going to have them in RAID 0, but now seen it doesnt support TRIM so Im a bit lost about what to do! :(

Previously I heard that Intel is only supporting TRIM for its G2 drives and not for the G1, presume this is still true?

Think so, haven't heard anything to suggest otherwise. Although still no sign of the firmware for the G2s yet.

So three things are needed; OS support, controller driver support and drive firmware support. Windows 7 covers the OS side. Firmware availabiltiy was appear in due course, Crucial seem to have been on the brink for weeks for their M225 drive. I'm not so clear about the controller side of things though.

I have two systems, one with the Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R P35 + ICH9R, the other the Asus P5N-E SLI 650i. There's no mention of TRIM support on the motherboard sites... Does W7 include the latest chipset drivers? Do I need to download directly from Intel or nVidia?

Not heard anything on nVidia. The Intel driver provided as part of Win7 supports TRIM, but is slower than the Intel drivers.

Thats the first i've heard about that.

You will have to wait for intel/nvidia to release new chip-set drivers, hopefully they'll be released with Win7.

This thread is hurting my head - I am going to put my Crucial 128GB drive in the cupboard for 2 weeks and let you lot sort it!!

I'd also like to know the answer to this question as I haven't read anywhere that motherboards must also have SSD (TRIM) driver support !

I've just ordered my first SSD (64GB M225) specifically for Windows 7 but I'm now seriously considering cancelling the order and waiting until the TRIM support is 100% sorted in all departments !

Its nothing to do with the motherboard, its the chipset driver / Sata controller driver that you need.

So:

OS (Win7 only atm)
SATA Driver (most are in MB chipsets, so in that case you need chipset driver eg 680, 790 etc)
Drive Firmware

Remember that the only OS supporting TRIM isn't even released yet...

TRIM is 'Bleeding Edge' as far a tech goes atm.
