trolling

Trolling takes on many forms on OcUK. Generally it's when you say something the OP doesn't want to hear. Apparently when people ask for an opinion, they only want certain opinions. Any others are 'trolling'.

Who cares about spelling. Some of you rejects use it to devalue someones opinion in the eyes of others, then nip off without answering it. Phwoooaaarrr.

Why have one standard of typing / English for a forum and another for an essay? Surely it is second nature to simply do things correctly all the time?
Yeah, but I can be sure that the only reason I'm typing this correctly is because I'm conciously thinking about it (due to the subject of this thread :p). Some people find things harder than others, and some people just aren't as perfectionist as others. Most of the time, it really doesn't matter... it's only when it's to the extremes that it annoys (most) people, but the occasional "its" and "thye" instead of "it's" and "they" is alright :p

Also some things are local useage of words - I had a friend who would say "He learnt me how to..." rather than "He taught me", but I didn't have much trouble understanding this strange useage of the word so didn't feel the need to say anything. It's different to trying to speak in a certain way to be cool, or out of lazyness. I think some things should only really be mentioned if you're honestly trying to teach them the correct useage of certain words, rather than just trying to pick holes in people

Not saying anyone's picking holes in anyone, ofc :)

I hate it when people missuse there, their and they're, is it that hard to use the right one?

Other than that I'm quite placid, but an entire post full of spelling and obvious grammar mistakes does grind my gears a bit.
Agreed on both points, there!

does this annoy anyone else or is it just me? when people tear your thread apart for no reason whatsoever? its a forum, not an english essay

opinions please anyone agree?

The thing is, I had to read your thread in console games three times before it made any sense.

It's just annoying having to read the same post over and over just because the OP can't be bothered to type correctly.

It's a good job I had my own "get of jail" free card regarding spelling and typing in the original post then isn't it? :P

Also *ahem* corrected.

Yeah, I was only playing. I'm not too picky about perfect spelling and grammar. It really depends on the kind of mistakes.

In fact I have my own habit of putting 3 periods in place of commas when I post... :p

...and a maybe a few too many smileys...but for me it's how the post can be read. If the grammar and spelling mistakes force the reader to make an effort to understand what the poster is trying to say then there is definitely a problem...otherwise I really couldn't care less as I've grown accustomed to all kinds of "forum-writing styles".

I'm one of the biggest trolls here then.

Surely it's more effort to mix up the word order?

This is old. :p

I feel I should contribute, being a self-proclaimed grammar nazi and not ashamed of it. I don't understand why anyone would not wnat to spell correctly and use proper grammar to show a decent standard as well as being taken seriously. It may just be me but I tend to ignore threads with overly bad language. Of course, I realise when people make typos, use abbreviations or spell harder words incorrectly. Even I do that. But there is no excuse not to try and make an effort to write proper english.

P.s. I don't associate trying to correct language as trolling; I define the latter as posting something that might offend the OP or trying to derail a thread on purpose.
