Morning :)

I'm looking to get the most out of my R9 290. I've heard about this Trueaudio and done a bit of googling (not much admittedly) and all I can find is this is the new next best thing ever! We will make all your sound better, your life complete and you will have more sex!

But, what it actually does and how it works, seems to be a bit more elusive. More to the point, is this for specific titles only? Does the sound still output via my MB or does it go through the GPU (displayport doesn't carry sound, does it?).

If AMD is to be believed, then this will rock my world but I have no idea how to use it. I'm guessing it's like Mantle, but for audio, in that devs have to specifically support it in their games.

So lovely folks of the GPU section, anyone speak stupid and care to explain?

Another piece of AMD tech with hype and ultimately little substance.
It's in like two games.
As far as I'm aware, you just play the game with the 290.

Sound does travel through DP btw.

Hi Diddums,

TrueAudio is an audio processing technology built into the gpu designed to offload advanced audio processing that could be done on the CPU, and in years past would have been handled on dedicated sound cards.

Anandtech took an indepth look at it a while back which you might find interesting.

You can find more information about it here from AMD.

TrueAudio is currently in two titles, both of which it makes a noticeable improvement too, in my opinion. Thief and Lichdom. AMD also created a demo for it called Tuscany.

Cheers folks.

So it's effectively just a gimmick then. Ah well, OcUK can expect an order for a sound card soon then :)

Why hasn't true audio been used in more games?

I have to say there was a lot of hype about it and now it seems to have died.

lol its not a replacement for a soundcard!
but yeh not enough games have bothered with it which is a shame

maybe amd should have paid some companies to make something good with it, bcos obviously game makers don't care about making good games anymore only about the $$$

It would certainly feel less of a gimmick if developers supported it.

My audio output is from HDMI to my A/V Receiver so it can 'replace' the sound card if you want it to.

but it does use the existing soundcard so....having a good soundcard still matters

think of it like phys-x but the exploding things are sound, atleast that's how it makes sense in my brain :o

Not in his case as his audio is being handled only by the gpu and his av receiver

If you are using a soundcard then yes the sound is still handled and output by the soundcard

This is one bit tech am hoping kicks off.. I expect to see more from TrueAudio is the future games..
I know ps4 also supports this so backwards compatability with pc and ps4 games..

My thinking is this needs games built from ground up to support this fully..
Thief didn't fully use TrueAudio, while Lichdom did..
The difference here is one had it patched while other was built in with the game audio engine..

This is my thinking why we not seen much.. If nothing this year then yeah I think it's dun and dusted.

but I thought hdmi out on gfx cards uses the sound card too
the gfx card just works as a bridge for digital output

just the same as if plugging it in the motherboards hdmi

Nar you be shipping the sound card. To use the sound cards features you need to plug into that device.

Bah, Bah, bah..

Just like Physx then? Odd game each year..

Am happy with the odd game.

PhysX has massively wasted potential for the most part too.

I didn't say anything about Nvidia, they weren't relevant. But of course they're relevant to you, because you're all about "getting one over" on the the other vendor, because you're just a massive fanboy.

And PhysX is one of the big physics library's, it's used a fair amount. It's hardware acceleration side of PhysX which is barely used. The distinction probably doesn't matter to you though.
