the Mid range i7920 is easily worth the few extra notes over the mid range i7860, so only the basic 860 setup makes financial sense.

Thanks m8 but i do have a MSI GD65 board sitting here that i got at discount price. so Does that still make you think i7 920 is the better way to go ?

Thanks Typhoon for the effort, we are starting to get somewhere now! :p

So why would you personally choose the 920 set-up over the 860 . . . :)

I'm sure you know the answers, just want someone else to say it for you :)

6gig Ram
Triple Channel
i9 (first ones will be EE but theres bound to be vanilla ones on the way)
Plenty of PCI lanes (with P55 your down to x8 if you plug in a sound card) for SLi, Crossfire etc.

I did choose an 920, build coming up http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18050449

hehe no I just don't wanna put words in your mouth or assume the reasons! :p

6gig Ram
Triple Channel
Slight but could be an advantage I guess

i9 (first ones will be EE but theres bound to be vanilla ones on the way)
ok £500 to £900 pound chips here!

Really? I didn't hear that before? . . . surely if you don't use either of the primary PCI-E 2.0 x16 slots and another 1x or 4x thats fine?

Don't want to interupt, but I don't know what to go for either 920 or 750? I want it to be futureproofed for at least 3 years. I'll use it for hardcore gaming , rendering and intensive cpu programs. Any advice would be much appreciated.

P55 only have 16 Pci lanes in total, so if you have a x1 sound card, your x16 slot has to drop down to x8 (unless you got a NF200 or the forthcoming Hydra chip, none of which will be cheap)

Why not pop in an 860?

What you got against non bloomfield Hyperthreading! :p

Nought wrong with that, its just my way of reasoning. If I buy a cheap car I wouldn't add £2k of options of top, I'd just get the basic no frills model; if i wanted all the toys, I'd buy a better car :) poor analogy but....

The MSI GD65 costs £131.99 for anyone that didn't pick up one on launch day, so what your saying is one should follow the cheap theme and add a cheap chip right?

I think what I'm saying is that there is merit in taking the cost saving from the launch day GD65 board and put that into paying the extra for the 860 over the 750.

On a strict budget your viewpoint makes absolute sense however for those not basing everything on a strict budget can you see how a 860 makes sense? :)

If I was to peek inside your mind I guess it goes cheap-as-poss i5 >>>>> Full fat Bloomfield i7 heh! :p

Hmmm, I don't know if that is right or wrong but I have a feeling that cannot be right! :p

Yes your right, my bad, when I was looking at the P55, all the MBs I looked at would mean losing the x1 PCi slot if you had a double slot Graphics card or ran SLi. This meant my sound card would only fit in the second PCI 2.0 graphics card slot, which would drop the 1st slot down to x8.

If you're encoding 24/7 and on the possiblity HT might save you a few mins a day then...

860...if you really need hyperthreading (cos you have the board already)
750...if you don't

920...if you want the extra RAM and possibility of an i9 upgrade in the future.
