Trying to decide i7 920 or i7 860

860 clocks are out there.The difference between the same clocked 860 and 920 is nothing.

hehe you forgot the mb on the 860 setup :D its a hard choice with so much to choose now,and i habe swopped and changed nealry every other day,but having seen then reviews and bench test and what i need for my needs ie gaming i have decided to go 860 which is going on water :)the 860 is a good chip and will do anything you need unless you into extreme over clocking and want bragging rights,which does not intrest me at all.
 
I know Big Wayne thinks i should go The 860 way im very tempted as i ge more parts for my money and like you i have the cheap board as well that saved me some cash.

I already have the discounted msi gd65 board which was cheap as chips.

If you didn't get a bargain GD65 mobo then there is no point going i7 860.

You can pick up X58 mobos for the same price as P55 and a cheaper 920.

The fact that I have got a cheap GD65 makes the choice between 750 and 860 more complicated. :p

Im in same boat really i got the cheap board which i know i can sell if i want for the same price or more if i wanted to. I know i can get a cheaper x58 for say £150 or i can leave the graphics card which i can wait for and get the x58 ud5 and the other thing is stock issuses as some of the stuff is not in stock on both orders. I wish it was this hard when deciding to get married i wouldnt have the heavy ball and chain around my ankle.

Why? As discussed theres arguments that 1156 is better than 1366, 1366 has full SLI/xfire but as most users stick to one high end gfx card this is moot, 1366 also has triple channel RAM over dual channel, but again very few users will notice any difference. 1156 on the other hand has better turbo boost, on board PCI-E controller resulting in better gaming results both at stock and when clocked, check out anandtech and techreport, where youll see for gaming the 750 outperforms the 920 AND the 950, so the 860 will spank it

I'm going for the 860 now :D
 
I'd go for the 860 over the 920 just for the better power usage, My idle dropped from 300watts (q6600) to 175!! My room temperature dropped from 26c average to 22 lol.

I wouldn't go down to the 750 though, the 860 multi-tasks really well! I think I should overclock mine at somepoint hmmm, just waiting for my new radiator and water block :D
 
I'm going for the Asus rampage formula III motherboard and the i7 860 + G Skill Ripjaw 4GB Ram.. Do any of you think it's a good combination? I would like to overclock it past 4Ghz.
 
I'm in a similar situation, £63 quid MSI board now I'm pondering the CPU, I was all but decided on the 750 until I read the closing gambit on this anand article (http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3639&p=4), I think he's trying tip the wink that the new 58xx series runs best of all on the 860.
"Therein lies the problem, you can play the “what if” game all day and it will get you absolutely nowhere. In the end, you have to choose a platform that best suits your needs and budget. I just happen to think the clear choice for my particular needs is the i7/860 processor on a mid-range or even budget P55 motherboard. We will soon see why."
 
For me its an easy choice.

You have to get the i7 860. Its makes sense. You already have the mobo , now you need the CPU.
In the real world you are not going to notice any difference between the 920 and 860. If anything the 860 is quicker at stock. They both have HT which will help on your encoding etc. Your not really missing out on the other as you have everything you could need in the 860.

Thats how i see it anyway.
