Trying to decide i7 920 or i7 860

well i decided to go i7 860 the reason was i already have the msi board and i can buy the extra things i want like video card upgrade and some silent fans plus the H50 when it arrives and still have about £100 left over from my budget.
But i just checked stock and stuff i wanted is out of stock like video card and memory so if i wake up in morning and feel i really cant wait then it might all change to i7 920.

Well i went over today to collect my i7 860 parts and ended up coming home with i7 920 parts instead after a bit of chatting with people at oc.

Just the case of the tripple channel makes a difference and some other thins with the 920 and the x58 boards i also old them i was encoding but i cant think of all the conversation now as it was too many hours ago.
At my age my memory is crap.
 
lol even when you pointed to the facts some ppl just don,t see it.i like you to explain to me what the advantages are going i7 920 over the i7 860 cos from what i have read there is none that would matter in real world,and i have yet to read 1 review thats says differant. i7 920 ht i7 860 ht so same,dual vs tripple no differance as the boards work differant and there is no gain sli mode again very little differance that you would notice,then we have upgrade,well i think most will never be able to afford the i9,so that dont, really come into it,gaming wise the 860 does better,its slightly and i mean slighty beaten by the i790 in editting etc but i very much doubt you notice it or it be a problem unless you was a hardcore graphic designer or was into video edditing for a living,to say a 860 is midrange is bs as pound for pound it matches or beats the i7 920 and would quite do 99% of the ppl on a daily basis.

well thats because they either already had a i7 920 so will always point you to what they have,and they didn,t have a choice as the i7 860 was not out at the time,but if it was i think you have got a differant response,don,t get me wrong i,m not saying you have made a wrong choice i,m only stating is the 860 would have been just as good for your needs.

Hey dudlings,

obviously there is no right or wrong, if someone wants a Double-Whooper when you think a Big-Mac is best then so be it. I'm a bit puzzled in chippy08's case as he already had a bargain LGA1156 board, I think maybe he got Jedi-Mind tricked by a salesman at OcUk heh! :p
 
The more reading i do the lynnfield chips seem very attractive, but id already got an x58 board so i went ahead tonight and bought an i7 920do and 6gb of ocz reaper 1600mhz cl7, the old upgrade itch got a hold of me.

yep i think so 2,was more a case of show me the money,instead of what was his real needs and would you see a big differance.
 
In chippy08's case. if he has the board already, get the cpu and ram and of you go. i know im going i7 x58 but theese new socket intel cpu's are very impressive, i see the new chipsets as a direct replacement for intels last generation p45 which was a very impressive overclocking platform.
 
The main thing that made me decide to go for a 1156/860 setup was because of the high temps with an overclocked 1366/920 setup, i.e., 95w tdp as opposed to 130w tdp, so when the better 1156 coolers and bolt-thru kits arrive I'll get something better than the Zalman CNPS10X Quiet, which even now gives me an o/c of 4.1GHz with respectable temps...
 
It does seem the 860 is a better choice for the large majority of people, of course the die hard overclockers/benchers with their three-way SLI and custom liquid cooling will see things differently! :)

It's all a bit blurry atm but should become clear as the next 12 months roll by, I'm sure the next gen LGA1366 chips will be stonking and have some of the goodies from Lynnfield like Increased Turbo Boost and a improved memory controller but will probably cost a packet!

After the next gen LGA1366 chips are released and all the Hoo-Haa settles down I'm sure we will see Intel release some even better LGA1156 chips for the P55 platform, so just bouncing back and forth between the two every six months or so.

I am wondering when Tri-Channel will really start to shine, at the moment it really isn't proving its worth as far as I can see :confused:

I suppose a large amount of this so called *features* get hyped so much from marketing etc but when the dust settles your left will something that actually doesn't so much heh! :p
 
Im sure the next 1366 chips will be very impressive. but as you mentioned in another thread. price will be an interesting factor on the next cpu's, im actually starting to wonder if buying an x58 setup was wise? £206.00 for a mobo, £206.00 for the cpu and £150.00 for 6gb of ram, some of it made from selling my q9550 and ocz reaper ram.
 
if i was buying a system now i would go for the 860, maximus and 8G mem.
saying that i got my I7 setup for 480 quid so cant complain :)
that was 920 from OC, rampage 2 from MM for 190 and some Trident Gskill 1800s at 90....
