I had another idea but the "Could be on SEGA Outrun" just totally threw me off it.

If this is a troll thread 5 stars, I'm not even angry. If it's not and we get it, I hope to god it sounds like your descriptions or you are in for some stick.
 
The era is completely out, but your hummed version reminded me a lot of Daft Punk, 'around the world', which does at least fit with your description of it being repetitive.

 
Found out what the tune was today. 4 years after making the original post. Song is called Night Birds.

Someone at work told me how to cure this a few months ago and to date it's worked. Whatever the song in your head is, sing it out loud for about 30 seconds, then it goes away in your head.
 
I remember a song where the lyrics were literally dar dar dar. I think it was either late 80s.

I wonder if there is a lyric search engine online?
