Turbo diesel for £2,500?

Hey,

I'm looking for a new runaround. I was using a Proton Satria GTI, but the insurance costs (group 16) and the silly MPG is eating my money.

So looking for a diesel fo some kind, not that fussed about speed obviously, but a nice bit of torque would be nice.
I'd like the usual mod cons and the car to be as new as possible?

What are my options?

Xsara with the 110Bhp HDI?

Xantia with the same engine is cheaper but older.

I'm glad you asked this question, because I'm in a similar situation (megane coupe 2.0l). No money from car eating to much petrol.

Although there are numbers in that quote.. as I've said before it's just not 'real'..

if you have a £2.5K budget, you will spend £2.5K on the car.. the fact is you can get a slightly newer petrol/less miles then a diesel for that money.. you will still have spent £2.5K..

But the diesel will be worth more when you sell it, and you will have been saving money on fuel.... I know from all my hire cars that I typically get 50% more MPG from a diesel.. giving me closer to 30/45 MPG for petrol/diesel, which over 14,000 miles is approx £50 a month saved.. not exactly paltry..

Well at the moment I get about 150 miles to £20, which is okish, but then I look at it, that the car isn't very fast and I'm not driving it quickly at all, so to me it does not warrant paying that much money in fuel. Also the fact the car is group 16 insurance I'd like to change car, so it's not purely down to petrol consumption.

So why not look at petrol cars as well that can do 40mpg ish, will get a newer car than a diesel and it wont sound like a tractor.

Also can you give insurance details eg how many years ncd and what your current premium is please.

Well I just wanted the best possible MPG and I was under the impression I'd get that with a Diesel!

I did this on the other thread, but just go and search on autotrader for a Citreon Xsara, max price £3K, nationwide search and price high->low..
It seems there is no price difference between trim levels, never mind disel/petrol, you can have a reasonable mileage 2002 diesel, or a 2002 petrol..
Its the same for the Mondeo GHIA X in the other thread.. for 6K there doesn't seem any difference in price between the petrol/diesel variants for the same year..

And looking for petrol cars that do 40MPG, lets say the Xsara 1.4 petrol Vs the 2.0 110 HDi, both over 40MPG, but the diesel is much much quicker...

Mind you you've got me on the Tractor noises.. just need to make sure the stereo is decent

Well it's both I want a cheaper insurance car and decent MPG with the new car!
NVM!

Anyway, I have 1 NCB, I am 21, pay just over £1k fully comp.
But I also insure another group 15 car, so it soon racks up insurance wise.

There is no such place in real world where Xara 1.6 vtr would get 40mpg. 30-35mpg is about right. 40mpg is same made up lab figure as 70 mpg for Citroen C2. Occassionally you'll hear tales of large petrol cars reaching 40mpg (such as TW's heaviest model of 2 litre mondeo as he will undoubtedly confirm) but generally Diesel is the only way to save a dosh, regardless of mileage. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, especially if they haven't tried the options they slate.
