Turbo diesel for £2,500?

I see no reason why you couldn't get 40mpg on the Motorway in a 1.6 litre Xsara.

And yes, just for v0n, I'll confirm my Mondeo easily does it.

But we are not talking "on the motorway for 30 minutes at 50mph and wind from behind" - we are talking day to day use, mixed cycle averages. On motorway his Proton Satria GTI is capable of 42 mpg. In his driver experience the figure is closer to 32 mpg. That should give us clear enough reference point not to presume he is not very likely to push a 36mpg car to 40 figures like TW does.

Diesel is the only way.

I'm glad you realised that, because neither are we.

FWIW, I'm talking a normal, proper motorway journey at an indicated 75mph.

1.8 GTi 3d 00 1834 / 4 132 126 7.8 32 16

So his proton is quoted as 32mpg he gets 30mpg, so why wont the xsara vtr which is 40mpg achieve very close to its figure.

Oh, the old chesnuts. What is official average figure for your car TW?

Because for VTR to do 40 average it would have to be capable of extra urban mpg of 51 mpg and we all know a sporty coupe doing 51 mpg in any cycle is nothing but a PR april fools.

I get 40mpg average from my saxo vtr driven quite hard so its possible.

So now imagine same engine in a car a quarter heavier than yours doing better mpg

Perfectly possibly given he says he gets 40mpg 'driven hard'. 75mph on the Motorway is not 'driven hard' so is likely to use less fuel. It's also not driving like a tedious granny, so is perfectly acceptable.

24.4mpg Urban, 47.9mpg Extra Urban, 35.3mpg Combined.
And you don't think your driving is mostly extra urban and will insist your 40 mpg is excellent example of perfect combined figure?

Mine is an 8 valve and is quoted at 42mpg, the vtr 1.6 in the xsara is a 16v and is quoted at 40mpg, the proton is quoted at 32mpg he is getting 30mpg. Hmm there seems to be a pattern of people getting 2mpg short of the quoted figures, so this means following my theory the xsara will average 38mpg.
:D

No, most of my driving is urban and I get about 25mpg. I have never said 40mpg is an average figure, what I said was:

I see no reason why you couldn't get 40mpg on the Motorway in a 1.6 litre Xsara.

Zero mention of 'average' or 'most of my driving'.

I said that, on the Motorway, over 40mpg is possible.

OK, I think you need some distance here - don't get me wrong - I don't doubt you do 40mpg from a saxo that is quoted to do 38mpg combined, but I don't think you do combined cycle, just like TW doesn't and that's that. You will not convince me ever that 110 bhp 1.6 french petrol engine can do 52mpg on motorway. It's the figures you don't get from PSA diesels, let's be realistic for a second.

But he never said it would, he said it would do 40mpg, not 52mpg.

No, he believes 40mpg is average, easily achievable combined figure. And that someone who barely does 30mpg from a car that technically could do 42mpg will experience similar figures.

No i think the 1.6 xsara would do high 30s mpg, average, and 40mpg+ on motorways. :)

You also think diesels sound like tractors. :D

You want a 406 or a Xantia HDi for this money.
Good advice this is.
If it's economy you crave petrolheads you should listen to not. Petrol leads to low mpg. Low mpg leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.
