Turn Baldurs Gate and its sequel into the single best CRPG experience you'll likely ever encounter

Its not ideal having too many multiclasses in the group as they gain EXP too slowly, but Jaheira, Aerie, and Jan all have great multiclass options and taking them all gets you two healers, 2 mages, a thief and a fighter all in just 3 character slots.

I'd take two tanky characters on top like Minsc and Keldorn, and if I'm playing with NPCs then I have to be a Kensai / Mage.

Swashbuckler / Mage is great fun and highly powerful for solo play, but you have both Jan and Imoen available in the game to cover that role instead.

Theres a mod available to change Imoen into a Swashbuckler / Mage, which is great for the -3 AC bonus, but not so much for melee because she only has 9 strength, and also Jan being a plain Thief + Illusionist multiclass eventually gives him access to HLAs in both classes, as well as a 7x backstab multiplier along with the bonus spell slot at every level which can be used to stock him up with invisibility / mislead / project image spells and then attempt to instagib enemies with backstabs.

Jaheira gets fighter and druid HLAs ... That means godly shapeshifts with Whirlwind attacks which is just insanely powerful (when I make custom groups, I always include a Fighter / Druid multiclass for how epic a frontline character it eventually makes). Plus you have full plate mail armor, scimitars which make the most sense speccing onto your druid, and Iron Skins for complete invulnerability to weapon attacks.

Aerie gets access to every spell in the game, and once she has higher level sequencer and contingency spells available, the amount of spell power and options she has in just insane.

On the other hand if you want to stick to single class characters for faster EXP gain, Viconia and Edwin are the best Cleric and Mage available in the game, and the evil dwarf fighter in the Copper Coronet has 19 constitution making him far better than Minsc, but they are all Evil as a drawback. Though they will combine well with any of the Neutral Characters except Anomen, but he is terribly annoying and you dont need him when you have Viccy.

So for a good party I would pick:

Jaheria or Anomen
Aerie
Minsc
Keldorn
Jan (Ditch Yoshimo asap, he is useless compared to Jan).

Evil party:

Viconia
Edwin
Evil Dwarf fighter (Kagain I think)
Jan
Hear'Dalis (Jan + Hear'dalis are Chaotic Neutral and can fit into any good or evil party)

Never combine Edwin with Minsc, or Viconia with Aerie or Keldorn, unless you enjoy watching them fight (also Keldorn will eventually kill Viconia).

I always liked Haer'Dalis, but could never really make him work in a group, he always seemed to get beat on and killed very quickly.

I am just coming to the end of BG1 and about to do the transition to 2. My main party is - PC, Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Branwen, Kivan.

I haven't done any of TOTSC yet though. Just to confirm, can you play it after you have started BG2?

Oh right. Are you sure? i thought the whole idea was that BG1 and 2 would be one big world. No big deal though, i will just have to go through it all pretty soon.

Fairly certain - there is a massive mountain chain splitting the Sword Coast and Amn (and the ToB expansion pushes you even further south). Not to mention going back to Baldur's Gate during the events of BG2 doesn't make much sense.
To be fair though, the best bit of TOTSC was Durlag's Tower. The two islands were rather bland by comparison.

I've fought my way through Watcher's Keep and am currently scratching my head at the machine of Lum The Mad. None of the codes from, the scrolls work and I can't get the portal to open. Nothing via google helps either.

Can anyone help?

I got BG1 and BG2 off of GOG and I went to download the Big World setup but it couldn't be found, could someone upload it for me?

The Big World Project Downloader and Extractor doesnt work anymore due to not being updated or supporting newer versions of mods.

They way I done it was to download and extract the mods manually that I wanted and used the Big World Setup.bat in the BGII folder to install the mods so none of them could conflict.

http://kerzenburg.baldurs-gate.eu/bwpmods.php - Mod list and downloads that are compatible with BWP.

If you need a detailed step by step guild I will try and find the guide I followed and post it for you.

If I wanted to get this mod, which version of BWP would I need?

Can you find the guide you used?

I bought the Master Collection from GOG this week for a fiver. Both BG games, Both Icewinds, Planescape and Temple.

I'm 46, I think I'll be drawing my pension by the time I finish all of these...

Enhance the gameplay in your edition of Baldur's Gate from GOG.com

http://www.gog.com/news/enhance_the_gameplay_in_your_edition_of_baldurs_gate_from_gogcom
1. Fully install Baldur's Gate: The Original Saga
2. Fully install Baldur's Gate II Complete.
3. Download Baldur's Gate II Fixpack (Download links are on the left side) and extract it to your Baldur's Gate II directory.
4. Run the newly extracted setup-bg2fixpack.exe (if not automatically started).
5. It is safe to select yes for all the optional fixes, but if you want to learn about each in detail, consult the readme file that comes with the fixpack.
6. Download BGT-WeiDU and extract it in your Baldur's Gate II directory.
7. Run the newly extracted Setup-BGT.exe and follow the instructions. You may need to run it in administrative mode in Windows Vista/7.
8. Enter Baldur's Gate I's directory when asked (if not already provided)
9. Wait for BGT-WeiDU to finish installing.
10. OPTIONAL: Download and install Baldur's Gate 1 Unfinished Business as well as BG 2 Unfinished Business. These mods restore things that were previously cut from the released product, so while you don't need them, and they do add new content, they're pretty nice to have, especially if this is not your first time.
11. OPTIONAL: Download and install any user-created material (banter packs, expansion mods, new NPCs, etc.)
12. Go to your Baldur's Gate II directory, then find and run the file Setup-BGTMusic.exe and select 'Hybrid Baldur’s Gate/Shadows of Amn/Throne of Bhaal music'. This makes it possible to hear the original Baldur's Gate music when playing Baldur's Gate I.
13. OPTIONAL: (for more experienced users) Download Baldur's Gate II Tweak Pack and apply it in the same way as the fixpack. Consult the readme file for details of each tweak - too many to list here. If you don't know what a tweak does even after consulting the readme, just skip it.
14. Download the widescreen mod and apply it in the same manner as the fixpack. This makes it possible to play the game in high resolutions and in widescreen format.
15. Remove the Baldur's Gate I installation if you wish - it's done its job!
