Turn Baldurs Gate and its sequel into the single best CRPG experience you'll likely ever encounter

Cool, i'm not that far in atm. Been hung up on Starcraft(shouldn't have gotten in to that).
I've probably been playing for about 20 hours so far. Started as a mage and found it quite difficult at the beginning (i never play as a mage)

invalid location or directory error on the cmd part .. damn that was pretty nasty install method. Going to try just Widescreen Mod again, although that 1 gives me errors when I enter buildings.

The biggest problem (aside from having low HP and close to no firepower in the beginning) with playing a mage is that a player created one can never match up to Edwin due to his amulet.
If you do pull through (suggest the Conjurer specialization as Divination spells can be covered by clerics and Identify isn't that expensive to buy and in SoA you can get two sets of identify goggles), then you'll have a nifty stronghold in SoA and the most powerful spells in game at later levels. As mentioned though - Edwin will still be superior.

I bought BG 1 and 2 from Gog last night when I was drunk.

I've never played them before so is the minimal mod the way to go?

I just want the games as close to the original experience as possible seeing as it's my first play through.

In that case I'd just play with the EasyTutu mod. That'll allow you to play BG with the BG2 engine. You can then play in higher resolutions.

So I installed this and the minimal mod onto mine and my brothers pc.
Multiplayer works on BG2, but it crashes when I try to create a game on BG1.

Also, BG1 doesn't use BG2's engine.. looks exactly the same as before.

Guess it doesn't really matter, as I'll probably just play BG2 with my bro.

Finally got the minimal installation to work with the Gog version of both games on Win 7 x64. Took a fair bit of messing about but if anyone else needs a guide on how to do it I'll type something up.

Sure, i'll add it to OP as a second guide

Don't think I'll bother with a guide now. Deleted my installation last night and reinstalled it because I wanted to check something about the process and I had none of the issues I had the first time.

The only thing I changed was making the path c:\gog.com\... instead of C:\BI\...

On another note though, I started a new game and created a Mage and am currently going round the inside of the castle grounds. The guys in the green robes keep telling how to equip and use magic but for some reason I can't.

I've put a level 1 spell in the memorise slot but can't equip it. What am I doing wrong?

Yeah, as mentioned before pure mages are incredibly hard to play early on. Ranged weapons and lots of running away are your friend. If you're playing it modded dual class a level of fighter or thief to give them bows and swords.

Thief / mage was always a favourite of mine, although in BG2 you get one ready made - Nalia, and Imoen, who's pure thief but just begging to be dualled to a mage.

Quite a bit in to 1 now. I am addicted!

Been playing it during the night whilst i have been at work on/off.

The only problem i am finding with the big world project is that the recommended version adds quite a few NPC's that you can add to your party that are a little overpowered. You don't have to use them of course, but it is tempting when you know you have a hard battle coming up, to switch your lv1 mage for a ready made lv4!

Install both baldurs gate completely, that means you choose "Custom" or " Full " during the BG1 installation and check every component

Do you need to have the GOG edition of BG1 for this to work. I have a disc version, and it doesn't seem to have an option for a full install - just gives me the option of 240 or 512MB cache size.

Edit: nevermind - just needed to click through to get to the options.

I can't believe i didn't take this seriously first time round! I never really got on with any D+D games, though i did enjoy BG2.

Just going through Gnoll Stronghold now, probably around the point i was the first time i played it.

Here are some screenshots for people wondering whether it was worth it! I do not have vanilla installed to compare them, but if you are thinking of this, you will know.

Party is Ajantis, Khalid, Kivan, Jaheira, Imoen. I am a fighter mage, lv3 atm.

Just reached Baldurs Gate now. Really enjoying it, i have also started Dark Side of The Sword Coast quests as well. Top class.

Does anyone know, does BWP rasie the exp limit, as Dark Side does on its own?

Also, I did restart as a multi fighter/mage, but i am starting to slightly regret it now as levelling up is a little too slow and mages i find are slightly underpowered anyway. Plus i played most of the game so far in armour as i couldn't find any decent robes so it was pretty useless playing as fighter/mage(i have got some decent robes now thoguh so have ditched the armour). Plus Imoen has turned out to be a very good mage as well
