What?
I for one don't watch any live TV or anything from the BBC at all. So why should I pay for it.
I don't use the Army, Navy or Air Force - why should I pay for them?
I have never been on Benefits, why should I pay for that?
I have no plans to go back to School, why should I pay for that ?

Because I believe in Society and am not a selfish sod.

Reading the selfish replies that predominate here, I do wonder how many people feel that borrowing books from a Library and not bothering to return them is acceptable?
Let someone else pay for their replacement!

On reflection, they have probably never visited a Library

They'll tell you that they've got an Audible subscription now so libraries deserve to die a natural death. :p

BBC IS NOT AN ESSENTIAL SERVICE.

Christ on a bike..

Pretty terrible examples there, the BBC is hardly an essential service to protect and grow society, it is a TV/Radio network, get some perspective :p

Would you pay for sky and not watch it?
Would you pay road tax (VED) if you didn't drive?
So on and so on.

You can compare paying for schools to posting for TV.

You benefit from all the things you mentioned.

Those things are essential services. The BBC is not, it's just entertainment (and they aren't even good at that anymore).

It's like being forced to pay for Netflix, then if you don't they try to threaten and extort you.

The BBC is an essential service.

Netflix is not a comparison to the BBC, at best it's a comparison to iPlayer.

In what way is it essential to modern life? I never feel the need to use anything the BBC offers, even during this pandemic.

There is nothing the BBC does which is special. In fact they aren't even the best anymore. Their management seem to think we are still in the 80s.

Good for you, however you are mistakenly assuming that your personal experience & opinion is uniform for everyone. It isn't.

The chances are that you have used a service today that was funded by TV Licensing.

. . . There is nothing the BBC does which is special. . . .
Remind me, which other news services make any sort of attempt to be "impartial"?

I suspect that you PERSONALLY couldn't care less about impartiality because you believe that corporations and the rich and powerful have an absolute right to pay to frame debate and the news to suit their agenda.

Despite your incredibly selfish perspective, there are many people who appreciate various different parts of the National Broadcaster's output, some of them may even feel that Sky / Netflix / Amazon is absolute populist, worthless, escapist soma for the brain-dead.

Do you pay for Netflix when you do not use it (I don't, I sub now and then)

You are trolling because I have heard it all 1000X over decades and it is all BS.

At Dick, sorry I meant Dirk the BBC is not essential, oxygen and food are or more sensibly a roof over your head and income/job to survive in society, I do not need the BBC period.

You both are 170 odd pages to late.

OK Babycakes, we can see you've put your foot down. :p

i earn next to nothing tbh but although im not thrilled about paying the fee i use bbc services a hell of a lot ,iplayer on my now tv stick is defiantly my favorite app use it more than sky cinema (£2.40 a month) ,and pretty much constant live stream as my satellite dish only works when the winds in a certain direction (yeh i know ,and i will sort it eventually) so not over happy but not losing sleep over it
