Eh? They have created a loophole to get people to pay for BBC iPlayer access, they have not closed anything.

The loophole was to get BBC television without paying for it, by way of watching it after it was aired on live television.

That is the loophole that they have closed.

A loophole, from wikipedia;

A loophole is an ambiguity or inadequacy in a system, such as a law or security, which can be used to circumvent or otherwise avoid the intent, implied or explicitly stated, of the system.

Unsolicited goods.

You could perhaps argue it is an unsolicited service if it wasn't covered by its own law.

I don't think it is a loophole. It is a loophole as much as listening to the radio without a licence is one.

Now if there was a way to circumvent whatever website design they come up with in September. That would be a loophole.

I also think most of the people saying they only watch catch up tv are liars.

It was NOT a loophole, it was the LAW which stated you did/do not need a TV Licence to watch Catch-Up and On Demand TV if it was NOT broadcast at the same time as a 'Live' Transmission.

And now you do, but only for the BBC....

It's a shame they don't just encrypt the channels. Then the people that actually want BBC TV can pay for it.

I don't mind paying a much smaller fee to manage the airwaves. Add £10 to council tax to cover that.

But won't that require untold millions of people to go out and buy new TVs and/or set-top boxes? Or will the BBC/government be providing these for free?

If done with enough warning it would be fine, just like it was done for the digital switchover.

With the increase of internet based TV it also becomes less relevant, as well as the significant number of households already able to access encrypted channels.

Leave BBC News 24 unencrypted.

The TV license is for all channels, not just the BBC

Semantics.

It is phrased as all live tv to ensure pretty much everyone is obligated to pay it. Not because any money is going towards paying for Sky Sports.

My comments about encryption would obviously require such a blanket phrasing of the law to be removed. The intention of my post is pretty clear.

Im quite surprised some of you guys actually let them in.

I like that service called "Freeview"..if your paying TV licence it isn't free is it? :D

Quite surprised they haven't implemented a system where you need a card with a chip in it to watch live TV..if you haven't paid its deactivated and dont work. (just like Virgin media etc)

I hardly watch much TV and most stuff I do watch are not on the BBC.

This little iPlayer loophole they have closed won't really affect me as I'll just carry on not paying regardless. I have saved well over £1K over the years in not paying the TVL.

I don't subscribe to Murdoch TV or Virgin either.

So you're admitting you watch live tv and don't pay it?

just lol

Only thing I watch on iPlayer is QT occasionally or the odd documentary.

Ah, well. I'll go without seeing as I just can't forgive their wilful bias over the past few years. Paedogeddon was bad enough but the migration crisis and referendum coverage killed it for me.
