TV Licence Super Thread

BBC should just abandon twitter, it dulls it's reputation participating in that revenue stream, even if the Lineker affair showed some partisan government behaviour it's generally well balanced,
do you really want to share a platform with the likes of Keir starmer and their silly Rishi did that/that stunt.

that news reporting tentacle is also at risk if public funding of bbc ceased.

dunno how the bbc can dispute that tbh, the british public don't fund it out of the goodness of their hearts, the law forces them to.

in a few years time when the license fee goes away and the bbc is funded from taxation instead it'll at least be clearer what the situation is.

Hopefully when it comes to an end they will need to fund themselves. Not get more tax money as that would be a huge waste when it's needed elsewhere. There is no need for the BBC as a public service anymore, we have the internet.

In the same way as car tax i guess, you can opt-out.
You can opt-out of income tax too... by not working. Either way, they are taxes.

At least the "car tax" (VED) makes sense, drive on a public road, pay the tax, drive on a private road, don't pay the tax.

But with the TV Licence, you're forced to pay it whether it's public (BBC) or private (ITV, etc.)

That isn't what car tax goes into though, it goes into a central pot where everything comes out of it.
Council tax is supposed to pay for the majority of road repairs.

Id imagine its really only live sport that is allowing TV licenses to tread water for as long as they have been. Everything else you can get from streaming services or the internet. I am aware that you can also stream sport illegally but I was talking within the realms of the law. As the blue rinses die off I just cannot see the current TV license model surviving. I haven't paid for a TV license since pretty much the inception of streaming services and get my news from the internet, youtube etc.

I imagine there would be riots on the street if they try include it as a tax directly from your wages. People are already at breaking point.

Correct, but I never said it pays for the road upkeep, just you have to pay to use it. Also the local authorities get paid by the national government a certain amount each year anyway for road use, so at least some does indirectly trickle back.

Careful, you'll get some people riled up with talk like that!
Oops haha. Because I submit a form to say I don't need a TV license? It is bad how you have to say you don't need a TV license but I'd rather do it and avoid any hassle.

Abolish the TV license ✊

Yep, definitely worth the money lol

I've been saying the same for years, pees me off cutting programmes I want to watch yet still have to pay for stuff that doesn't interest me. Don't get me wrong there is some stuff like Digging for Britain, Dragons Den, Happy Valley etc but what really annoys me is the cutting of sports programmes, no Formula 1 or Open golf now for example.

They are getting like the military. Cost a fortune and have lots of plans but no actual soldiers.

Most of the cash is going in to paying giant wages for a few celebs, to host a few programs.

It has turned in to a gravy train for a few celebs with ridiculous wages. It seems to exist to keep them going. Would another channel hire someone like Garry Linker and pay him that much?
