TV Licence Super Thread

The BBC doesn't provide anything which is vital, or even unique anymore. Everything they offer you can find elsewhere and now usually better.
As already mentioned, they do a lot of r&d within the broadcasting and are still creating standards which others are using (you just have to read their blog); not many other broadcasters are doing this. And as someone else said, they do fund (some of) the infrastructure needed for broadcasting.

The quality of BBC programming has gone downhill massively.
You've demonstrated my point. The fact is, the BBC is a lot lot bigger than just TV and radio programming and as this thread shows, the majority of folk don't realise that or are simply refusing to listen.
I do feel a decent (TV) series about how ingrained the organisation is in the nation and the services they provide wouldn't be a bad thing and may change a few people opinions.

As for your opinion on programming, a lot of that is down to budgets which is why the likes of ITV and Channel 5 continuously pump out reality and informational type tripe as it's cheap to produce.

So why do we care, go back in time 50 years ago an abolish BBC and the only thing that would change is, many children would not have been abused.

Many more would not have been abused (along with saved bloodshed in wars) if you abolished religion a few thousands of years ago but i imagine there's still plenty in this thread that believe a man in the sky exists, pray daily and go to church or a mosque.

Although it's baffling what that has got to do with my comment about broadcasting r&d and protocols they've developed...it seems like you're grasping for the sake of it.

I dont know how to be more clear than my previous post. All this R&D you are talking about is nonsense, erase the BBC from history and nothing would change in any meaningful way, in terms of technology.

Also If you go back in time to wipe out religion, you'd not prevent any wars, or, you'd prevent specific wars like crusades, but other wars would erupt instead.

After your absurd previous comment I think I'm going to have to ask for some kind of grounding for this statement else it's erm, ******** really.

The BBC has played a humongous role in you watching TV and listening to the radio in this country regardless of what you believe or feel, and they still do.

Would removing the BBC have stemmed the development of broadcasting in this country? Yes, no, maybe; it's impossible to tell and you'd be guessing at best.
Although you appear to be alluding to the idea that something will always fill the void regardless of removing X from history. But, that would put a big ol' hole in your argument that "...abolish BBC and the only thing that would change is, many children would not have been abused" as surely another organisation would have taken it's place?

And being pedantic, i never said the removal of religion would prevent any wars, i said "along with saved bloodshed in wars", ie - 'some'.
Although i guess, by the lack of comment on religion and child abuse, you're in agreement that abolishing religion would had a bigger impact than the BBC here.

I dont know how to be more clear than my previous post.
Unfortunately i can't help you with your incoherent argument.

The one they archived? Can you provide examples of useful R&D and standards that others are using?

The HLG standard for Broadcast HDR Tv. Most broadcasters around the world use HLG (including Sky in Europe and the UK).
The reason is quite simple, it's backwards compatible with SDR so can be broadcast in the same stream as SDR and HD.
Yes it's rubbish compared to HDR 10 or DV, but any HDR content you watch on Sky or Iplayer is HLG.

I got my first letter today stating “I have to notify them if I’m not needing license” usual mumble jumbo about how many people they prosecute a day etc etc…

Binned it looking forward to a visit.

Given the "i'm alright jack" angle of this thread and in the same vane as @Brazo "Ariel’s and masts don’t exist" - for me schools "don't exist", for me NHS dentists "don't exist", for me job centres and benefits "don't exist" and there's many more services that "don't exist" - so why am i subsidising them?
* i am being facetious but the point of how absurd Brazo's comment was still stands.

They still are but again, there's far too many folk here just sticking fingers in ears whilst rambling on about TV content and attempting to compare the BBC to Netflix.
Gosh! I’d suggest comparing unnecessary services such as tv to the NHS is even more absurd! There’s always someone on this forum who has to play the strawman!

Why not just spend the 5 minutes to tick the box and stop the letters? It would have taken you less time to confirm with them you don't need a license than it did to post in this thread...

Because I have when I declared I do not need one when I stopped using the services. If they are going to send threatening letters and threats of visiting my address why should I do anything for them. No other subscription service does this most send you offers of discounts to re-subscribe. If my circumstances change and I need one then I will pay. I do not need to be sent threatening letters to tell me I must declare I don’t need one when I don’t have to do anything.

You wasted as much time replying to me as I did posting. :D

You probably missed the facetious part but just to make sure we're all clear on it - i have no issue subsiding those services even though i don't directly use them. In the same way, i have no issue paying for the upkeep of broadcasting infrastructure.

P.s - I said 'NHS dentists' not specifically the NHS as a whole, i'm not that much of a ****.

You shouldn't notify them wasting your time to tell a company you don't require their services. Who do they think they are.
Waste their time and money posting letters and making visits and it will be a faster march to end this scam.

This has been discussed a few times in the thread. I'll give my own recent experience as an example.

I decided to stop watching live TV as I wasn't prepared to pay for the licence anymore for so little benefit. So I went to notify them online. But their website wanted my email address. I wasn't going to give them my email as it's none of their business. simply wanted to tell them my address no longer needed a licence. All they need was my physical address. Yes I could have put a fake email in there instead, but then what is the point of completing the form if you're going to lie (and probably have to confirm at the end that you have answered all questions truthfully). So I just closed the browser. Then my wife insisted on calling them to let them know. Annoyingly she handed the phone to me when asked questions. They wanted to know what we watched. That's none of their business so I refused to tell them. At that point they said they would periodically send someone to my house to check I still didn't need a licence. In reply I told them I didn't agree to them coming in my house. After a short time where the questions about my viewing habits became more and more accusatory and me refusing to give answers and refusing to agree to them being allowed to come into my property to check, they tried to pass me to "another department". At that point I put the phone down and cancelled the direct debit.

It's not worth calling them. I've had one letter so far and that just went in the bin. It is no inconvenience at all to ignore them. If they want to waste money sending me letters then that's their issue, not mine.

I have no problem with the not doing it, it's the running to the internet to announce that you are not doing something that would take less time than telling everyone yo are not doing it thing, it's all a bit 'look at me I'm so edgy I don't have a TV license and I don't even care if they come round man'

Yep I’m definitely “edgy”... :D

Similar to us when the other half called them.

They wanted to know everything to try and catch you out and to say you needed a license.

Just told them we no longer watch any live TV and as a result do not need their services anymore.
