The BBC doesn't provide anything which is vital, or even unique anymore. Everything they offer you can find elsewhere and now usually better.
As already mentioned, they do a lot of r&d within the broadcasting and are still creating standards which others are using (you just have to read their blog); not many other broadcasters are doing this. And as someone else said, they do fund (some of) the infrastructure needed for broadcasting.

The quality of BBC programming has gone downhill massively.
You've demonstrated my point. The fact is, the BBC is a lot lot bigger than just TV and radio programming and as this thread shows, the majority of folk don't realise that or are simply refusing to listen.
I do feel a decent (TV) series about how ingrained the organisation is in the nation and the services they provide wouldn't be a bad thing and may change a few people opinions.

As for your opinion on programming, a lot of that is down to budgets which is why the likes of ITV and Channel 5 continuously pump out reality and informational type tripe as it's cheap to produce.

So why do we care, go back in time 50 years ago an abolish BBC and the only thing that would change is, many children would not have been abused.

Many more would not have been abused (along with saved bloodshed in wars) if you abolished religion a few thousands of years ago but i imagine there's still plenty in this thread that believe a man in the sky exists, pray daily and go to church or a mosque.

Although it's baffling what that has got to do with my comment about broadcasting r&d and protocols they've developed...it seems like you're grasping for the sake of it.

I dont know how to be more clear than my previous post. All this R&D you are talking about is nonsense, erase the BBC from history and nothing would change in any meaningful way, in terms of technology.

Also If you go back in time to wipe out religion, you'd not prevent any wars, or, you'd prevent specific wars like crusades, but other wars would erupt instead.

After your absurd previous comment I think I'm going to have to ask for some kind of grounding for this statement else it's erm, ******** really.

The BBC has played a humongous role in you watching TV and listening to the radio in this country regardless of what you believe or feel, and they still do.

Would removing the BBC have stemmed the development of broadcasting in this country? Yes, no, maybe; it's impossible to tell and you'd be guessing at best.
Although you appear to be alluding to the idea that something will always fill the void regardless of removing X from history. But, that would put a big ol' hole in your argument that "...abolish BBC and the only thing that would change is, many children would not have been abused" as surely another organisation would have taken it's place?

And being pedantic, i never said the removal of religion would prevent any wars, i said "along with saved bloodshed in wars", ie - 'some'.
Although i guess, by the lack of comment on religion and child abuse, you're in agreement that abolishing religion would had a bigger impact than the BBC here.

I dont know how to be more clear than my previous post.
Unfortunately i can't help you with your incoherent argument.
