TV Licence Super Thread

Interesting that the bbc seem to have done some actual journalism over the last few weeks.
Firstly a report that asylum seekers and immigrants may be...wait for it...not telling the truth.
Then one today about how gangs might be selling drugs via corner shops and dodgy barbers.

I mean theyre about 20 years behind the times but good to see theyre trying!

... which was then completeley nullified today, headlining their latest nothing burger about epstein having a few flats in london,
announced by their 'investigation' journalist, it mut be a quiet day (not) so they decide to release this as a bit of a diversion in the presence of other more serious issues.

They're such shysters

Just moved into a new house, and of course there are a bunch of letters on the floor, addressed to "legal occupier'

Each one gets progressively worse, it's like;

  1. Bruv, you need a TV license..
  2. Investigation triggered!! you have not told us whether you need a licence, blah blah blah,
  3. Lenny Mclean has been dispatched to kill you, BUT YOU CAN STILL STOP IT BY PURCHASING A LICENSE ;-)
The way they have their poxy little red stamp on the letter, with "HOME VISIT APPROVED" on it, as in some cretin goon from Capita is going to show up.

**** this outfit.

How dare you suggest that there’s a lack of serious journalism in the BBC..

This is important stuff!

I recently moved house and although I am paying for a TV license and did update my address, threatening letters to the "legal occupier" are arriving. I'm at work now so I don't have it to hand, but I think the one received this morning gave me 10 days before they send the boys round.

This TV license enforcement is just insane, I thought council tax was bad - if you had an issue there they'd be really aggressive, but the council is like paw-patrol compared to TV licensing enforcement now.

It just makes me laugh how there's somehow resources for this sort of thing - it's just the ******* television ffs, it's not important - it's not a serious issue that demands this much attention, leave us alone :(

Are they not looking into adding it to council tax and increasing the price for higher bands ? ofcourse i saw it on the internet so ..

iPlayer does give you a "do you have a TV licence" prompt that means nothing technically of course

IF you've got a BBC account and use iPlayer they do appear to now be sharing that information with TV Licensing so they can check if you have a license or have declared you don't need one.

I notice that BBC News and Sport have started requiring you to log in to their website to read some articles. I deleted my account when I stopped paying my license. Going to need another news and sport website.

e: correction

Rather annoyingly I received a letter last week addressed directly to me, even though I informed them that no license was required a year or so ago. Typically presented as an important notice with pointed "YOU need a TV license to watch blah blah blah".

What's the point of engaging with them if they continue to send letters?!

They're no doubt annoying but just bin them.

The letters are designed to catch out genuine offenders and because prosecution rates are so low, they need to be heavy handed in the language used.. That's all it is.

I'd be interested in an anonymous poll asking wether or not people have one and if they don't, do they still watch live TV and the BBC.. I'd bet good money that there's a few in this very thread that still stick the BBC on despite parading the fact they don’t pay.

I have friends and family that watch iPlayer (not live) from outside the country. I have no problem with that at all tbh.

Not an approach I will ever agree with. They're designed to scare you into paying, even if you have no intention of watching. Heard lots of stories where some people are paying purely because they want to stop these letters or visits, which is an absurd reason of course as 'not watching' is enough as a reason, but they feel they have no choice.

Capita love sending scary letters, and all it seems to do is make people who legitimately don't need a license worry as the people who are dodging it don't care.

I do sound like a broken record as multiple people have said this in this thread, but none of these stupid tactics are needed if the world service is put under taxation and the TV/radio under a subscription service.

Nothing worth watching for me. Its not something I miss at all. But my viewing habits are niche. In fact I don't watch much of anything of late.

Actually had a visit from these the other day, threatening letter etc.

"TO AVOID ANOTHER VISIT ACT WITHIN 7 DAYS."
I've never had such a letter. Only one asking if anyone is watching. If no you can discard the letter.

Took me a long time to think about cancelling Sky then my TV licence. Ditched Sky November 2024. Then ditched the TV license October 2025.

Used to think it's all repeats, not much worth watching. Out working or out after work. Games or Youtube and Streaming services at night along with Amazon Prime. What's the point keeping services that are no use?

I miss the MotoGP on BT Sports.

Next thing is getting the old Octo dish off the back of the house.
