Putting the on-demand service behind a paywall is thought to be an “opportunity” the broadcaster could pursue in the years ahead.
Kerris Bright, the BBC’s chief customer officer, raised the prospect during an all-staff call on Monday.
The proposed clampdown comes as the corporation grapples with growing licence fee evasion and significant job cuts.
Under current rules, anyone who watches or records live TV on any channel or uses BBC iPlayer must have a valid TV licence, costing £180 a year. Around 12.5pc of households are thought to evade the bill.
In a recording obtained by Deadline, Ms Bright told BBC staff that the broadcaster should “absolutely keep looking” at putting iPlayer behind a paywall, but conceded that such action was not yet viable.
“iPlayer is the only service really that’s licensable where you could actually decide to put a gate in front of it, but the data today says that actually [there’s] not really the return on investment for doing that,” she said.
“The data says ... [it] is not the silver bullet to generating more revenue. There’s probably more cost in it than revenue, but it is something we should absolutely keep looking at because it might be something that you actually would want to do in the future.”
A source confirmed to The Telegraph that while blocking iPlayer was not currently viable, staff were informed that the BBC would keep the idea under review as streaming technology continued to improve.

I didn't watch it, although I did listen to the semi final on talk sport which doesn't require a licence.
But its nothing new a lot of the streaming channels have got greedy and have added adverts to their streams unless you pay even more for their "premium" packages.
What?
People don't have any choice if they wanted to watch it live legally in the UK they either paid for a TV licence or went and watched it at the pub a lot of which will have had ticket only events for the matches so either way you are paying to watch it.
The current speculation is what method they are going to use to stop those of us that don't watch live broadcasts at home from opting out of the absurd licence fee their current favourites seem to be adding it to council tax or our electric bills at a time when those bills already keep going up.
I don't need a big fountain in the city centre and I don't need a childrens hospital or a care home but we all pay for them via taxes in one form or another...
Eventually the TV licence will probably become just another tax that we can't opt out off regardless of how much we all moan about it on sites like this.
People like you who just go along with things like this just make life worse for everyone else.

If they plonk it on council tax etc and remove the option to opt out I won't be happy.
They messed up my single person council tax discount threatened me with a CCJ said they corrected it then proceeded to tell the court I owed them money and issued a CCJ they eventually sorted it but there's diddy squat you can do if they change the law and stick it on council tax other than vote for a party that says they will scrap it.
The BBC are generating income from other streams, they are making people redundant and cutting costs and I would be happy for it to become a subscription service behind a paywall but I just don't believe Labour or most of the parties will let the BBC just wither and die.

Had another letter this week, with "10 day notice" on the front of the letter shown through a clear part of the envelope. Makes it look like i owe money or something. Absolutely vile tactics. Still says "current occupier" and not my name. I was going to go online and tell them i don't need a license, done this for the last 14 or so years. But honestly i think i will just leave it and hope i get a guy knock on my door.
Yea I get those as well. It goes round in a cycle from "please pay us" to "pay us now or else!", no one actually comes to the door.
Pretty sinister considering this is just an optional entertainment service. If any other company acted like this, people would be going to prison.
We recently moved house and obviously I didn't tell the BBC. No new letters yet.

At this point the BBC are probably single handedly propping up the Royal Mail postal service. If we all bought licences again then hundreds of posties might be made redundant
One wonders how much of the licence fee funds are being used to send out those letters.
Absolutely this, it's not an issue of paying for content it's how little chill tvl has about it. imagine if the moment you cancelled a sky/netflix/prime subscription they threatened to send the goons round to make you pay as you say we'd be up in arms about it.
Says a lot that bezos (in this one specific instance) is the lesser evil.
