There is a chasm between the understandable societal necessity for healthcare, education and public infrastructure, and strictly come dancing.

One assumes bbc news has entered the chat.

With an argument that it's necessary because it's not beholdent to the bottom line of shareholders.

And yes, that is a point that would stand, if independant journalism wasnt a thing that the modern media landscape offers.

I certainly dont have an issue.

Although thats predicated on the definition of "core services" which for me doesn't include bbc news, any entertainment (documentaries included), or any 3rd party channel that already has its own revenue stream.

Raw livestreams of the halls of politics, the halls of justice and the emergency broadcast system would be a necessary public service (and idk if we even have all of those), cant think of what else to add.

Anything else stick it behind a paywall or run ads like the rest of the modern media landscape does. If people want to pay for bbc absolutely let them do that same as i pay for prime.

I know, it's truly shocking to just "go along with things" paying for children's hospitals and care homes; people should be ashamed of themselves!!!111!!!

The TV tax isn't a children's hospital or a care home you Twonk, it's a biased arm of the government.

I was more leaning towards their education services, R&D or perhaps world radio services but news, sure.

Why not spin that off? I don't think many would have an issue with core services.

It's been brought up many times in this thread alone (moving BBC TV/entertainment programming to subscription and the rest of their services into general tax) but that still seems to rattle some.

Personally i wouldn't have an issue with this although i would argue to keep some of the (BBC produced) education and kids TV programming publically accessible - could be through a free-to-air TV channel, their website, YouTube etc.

Edit - What i don't want is for us, as a country, to race towards something like they have in the states; which IMO is a complete **** show.

If you wish to specify items worthy of general taxation go ahead, but regional services that get zero or close to zero views imo don't count.....
