TV Licence Super Thread

Aren't we down to something like a hundred free places in prison? It could backfire massively if there is mass non compliance.
If it was a couple of quid on broadband/council tax you’ll get a bit of moaning maybe some small protests but the vast majority will just shrug and pay it. If it was applied universally like this combined with a reduced budget it wouldn’t need to be more than a couple of quid a month on a direct debit you already pay!

I think what everyone needs to accept is that the BBC is, for the time being at least going to continue to exist and be funded by some form of license/taxation. I know there are a number here who wish this wasn’t the case (and plenty of populist politicians) but there is no way the BBC’s charter doesn’t get renewed this year. So instead of shouting into the wind you would be better off pushing for a reduced BBC with a reduced budget (pretty much what is happening) and accepting however the government decide to fund it which will seemingly be some sort of tax levy.

This YouTube/Netflix whatever they want it call it tax is the worst idea they've mentioned so far.

They don't send anyone to prison over a TV licence anymore, not for years. It's not like people who dodge it are a danger to the public.

It's also one conviction employers don't care about, like driving ones.

No, the point Alex was making was that if put on council tax, and you refuse to pay, then the penalty for not paying council tax can include prison in extreme cases.

People will just suck it up and pay it though.

Which obviously the government have done of their own accord with no input or request from the BBC at all. No siree.
The charter is renewed once a decade it is a government process and these are ideas/recommendations from a parliamentary committee. I get that people in this thread dislike the BBC but they are not making he decisions here, if you hate ideas write to your MP as they are the ones who will decide.

Why don't they put it on broadband? How on earth are they going to admin it on streamers?

They'd need the streamers to all report to the government, address or names etc. You'd then have to constantly keep up with people subbing for a month then not.

Surely the government will, in the end, do the lazy combo with broadband?

Or will it be a "do you have a TV licence" and you pay if you're honest but no checks are made?

I'm fine with it going on streamers, I'll just cancel Netflix. I barely watch TV now on any streamer as there is nothing that is grabbing me. Last 5 months only thing I've watched on Netflix is reruns of shows I've already watched.

Broadband is one of the proposals. The government haven't made a decision yet.

It'll be broadband. I mean I'm surprised it's not on council tax at is inescapable by most (I'd have to pay).
Streamers may help BBC out a bit I suppose. But for someone like me.. Am I really going to swallow my Netflix. Sub going from 13 pounds to 25 pounds? No I am not.

Ideally (from my selfish perspective) I'd much much rather it apply to streamers than CT or BB.

I mean that'd be no different to the current system and then we'd wonder why did they even bother.

I agree. I just don't know how they will handle the admin of it being enforced.

Maybe you'll need to put in your TV licence ID or something to access streamers? I dunno.

It won't be streamers as vpn use will just blow that idea out of the window. As much as I wouldn't like it; the best and fairest way is still via CT, which should mean a) the actual cost should be cheaper for all than the current £180, as all residents would be in-scope and b) it should actually be considerably cheaper for lower band households if calculated based on a percentage.
