A reminder just in case one isn’t despising the BBC enough..Shame they took down that BBC Bitesize game for kids that I hear a lot about....

Dame Margaret – who is chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Responsible Tax - gave a lengthy explanation. She explained that Netflix creates content in the UK, supported by grants that it receives here through the UK’s tax credit system, yet it pays tax on the profit that it makes here in the USA. Netflix’s global operating profit rose by an ‘enormous’ 61 per cent last year to £2 billion. By 2019, Netflix had 11.62 million UK subscribers, who generated a £1.08 billion income, but she explained ‘under the ruse it employs’ any UK citizen who subscribes to Netflix is billed not in the UK but from a subsidiary company in the Netherlands. Money declared by Netflix in the UK is paid by the Dutch subsidiary to a much smaller subsidiary based in Britain, which makes up just a trivial proportion of the services the company provides. Tax Watch UK estimates that the actual profit Netflix made in the UK was close to £70 million in 2018, so the company should have paid over £13 million in corporation tax, she said. From the publicly available data and translating that data into pounds sterling, she said between £251 million and £329 million of non-US profit was shifted into tax havens from the Netherlands.
The absolute best bit of that report is when he says ‘almost every right wing answer has negative impacts on the economy and public health’, it seems he actually learn’t something from the game so maybe it worked afterall but he just didn’t like the fact that right wing populist policies are generally bad for the country…..A reminder just in case one isn’t despising the BBC enough..
Which is kind of exactly what the answers on the bitesize quiz said!Right wing stuff is good for those who have good jobs, good health, very rich.
America does well as a country (gdp) but quality of life if you are unfortunate is not good. Especially at end of life when your medical bills sky rocket.

No that’s the populist stuff that gets them elected then what they actually do is stuff the pockets of the rich while systematically doing over the poor that voted for them. If you care to look there is an orange man in the news all the time he makes a good object lesson. Oh and he’s trying to take the BBC to the cleaners for 10 billion so you will probably all love him and turn a blind eye to his rank corruption just to ‘stick it to the man’!Or want security, safety and a country that cares for its own citizens above those of other nationalities that seek to leach from it?

You've basically just described all tax, I pay a fortune each month for things I don't want or use (or often, that I am actively opposed to), makes the tiny amount I pay for the TV licence seem like great value for what I get. There is no fair way to make people pay for something they don't want or use.

Yes, some stuff that taxes pay for is worthwhile and absolutely necessary, plenty isn't, but I can't opt out of those.the difference is societal need.
wether you're personally using it or not, we all need a functioning healthcare system, infrastructure like roads, water, sewage, protective services like military, policing and fire services that keep us safe, schooling etc. in many cases it's unavoidable that you're using these services directly and in the rest you're indirectly benifitting.
tax pays for these things because collectively as a society we've deemed some things need to be done that are beyond the resources of a single individual to accomplish.
what societal need is a bunch of sort of famous people dancing on tv fulfilling?
All subjective and all covered by alternative providers. The BBC does fulfil a societal need, it provides high quality, educational content, entertainment (which I would argue is important), news, as well as a huge range of services across multiple platforms.
Which is your subjective opinion! All subjective and all covered by alternative providers.
What don't you need or won't need in the future? You've basically just described all tax, I pay a fortune each month for things I don't want or use (or often, that I am actively opposed to), makes the tiny amount I pay for the TV licence seem like great value for what I get.

The future of the BBC should definitely be open for debate, intelligent discussion of how it can fulfil it's public broadcasting remit, remain relevant and keep it's costs to a minimum should be encouraged. Sadly most of the anti BBC commentary in this thread seems to come from people who think it is some communist mouth piece actively campaigning for the end of the united kingdom which really they know isn't true, Nigel Farage wouldn't get such a disproportionate mount of airtime if that were true!
There is no way it goes the way of the dodo just yet, the political will to make this happen just isn't there at this point in time. What I think we will see is a reduced BBC (This is already happening) with a permanent charter and a new way of covering it's costs be that a digital services tax, a council tax levy or money from general taxation. Those who hate the BBC won't be happy some others will lament the reduction of a national institution that is globally recognised and as always the truth will be somewhere in the middle.
Exactly! So if there's no value in it for me (outside of international football tournaments every 2 years and even then the choice to watch on the bbc falls on whose co-commentating), the last time I actually watched something on the bbc was 4 years ago - s1 of The Traitors. Why should I be forced to pay for it?Which is your subjective opinion!
Well its only a 'reduced' bbc because they keep cutting departments and services (BBC Three, BBC Scotland and BBC Radio 4 Extra the latest to get the chop), and again why should any company that rakes in 6 billion a year essentially get a 'get out of jail free card' and have people forced to pay for it? There are millions in this country living below the poverty line and yet if people such as yourself get their way they will soon have a new bill to include in their budget. There is no way it goes the way of the dodo just yet, the political will to make this happen just isn't there at this point in time. is it really globally recognised these days? That might have been true 30/40 years ago but it seems most people know it for the almost annual scandals its involved in popping up these days. Those who hate the BBC won't be happy some others will lament the reduction of a national institution that is globally recognised and as always the truth will be somewhere in the middle.
