TV licence

Does anyone think that only licence payers should be allowed to use iPlayer? It *is* a BBC service after all, and can't help but thinking that it would make paying the license seem a LOT more worthwhile.

I think you shouldn't be forced to pay for a TV license. You should have the option of which channels you want to pay for, Just like cable TV. If you don't want to pay the £12 a month your signal should just be scambled

No, how would they tell who did or didn't?

I'd like to see them stop using the appalling p2p system and make their own.

To the OP, you need to call them to advise that you arent using a TV for viewing TV progs, they make a note on your file and advise that you will get random visits to check and thats that, no reminders IIRC for 3 yrs? Have done this on my last 2 properties and only had 1 check up so far, even then when I invited him in he said no need, if you were lying you wouldnt let me in! lol :D

And for the record I dont sneakily watch TV :p

Also IIRC the license states that you cant watch TV broadcasts as they are aired, so basically pre-recorded stuff should be ok, but check it out just to be sure.

The BBC provide an excellent service - some great shows, iPlayer, top quality world news, etc. There is a hell of a lot of content being produced for the licence fee. Anyone viewing BBC services / content without paying the licence is a freeloader.

rather have adverts and what amazing programs do the bbc produce? i think the only bbc program watched in my house is eastenders by my wife...

its not like the bbc is amazing and there content is better than there competitors who rely on advertsing.

i think the last awesome program from the bbc i can think of was jekyll and i watched that on dvd anyway that my wife bought

Really? You honestly think the BBC is that much better compared to other TV companies in this country?

They're sports coverage is very good, I will give them that - although they've lost a lot of football to ITV (yay... David Pleat )

As far as BBC programs go, the only thing I would regularly watch on the BEEB is Top Gear and that's not exactly on every week of the year.

I just don't see why they force people to pay for a service that they don't use.

It would be like Sky forcing everyone to pay for every single channel, whether you watch the kids channels, or the sports, or the movies, or the porn or whatever.

Turn the services off for those that don't want it, simple as that. There are thousands of genuine people out there that don't watch TV, or don't own a television and get berated by the TVL/BBC to pay when they have no reason to.

the bbc make utter crud! the only thing i liked about them was the news and i prefer there web site to be honest. MOTD was the only program i watched and that can be downloaded the following morning on a legal torrant site.

To be honest the standard of program on TV (in particular BBC) is rubbish. It's just rehashed ****. Top Gear / Doctor Who / Football are the only things I watch so I think we should be subsidised because we don't watch as much crap as next door.

I think I'm right in saying that we are the only country in the EU that has this kind of licence. It's so antiquated that it should have been abolished decades ago. Yet we are still paying more and more (and the BBC have the cheak to ask for even more money!) for programs that shouldn't be shown on Channel 5 let alone the mainstream ones.

Argh I hate them the bunch of thieving ********!

I think the fee should be abolished and on a pay per view basis/subscription. They will never do this because the BBC would lose to much money.

But anyone watching BBC content without a license is just a ***** as it's hardly bank balance breaking is it? Ignoring requests for payments is just plain stupid. Would that guy in the previously posted link do the same with their council tax? I think not as he would prob lose all his posessions including his TV should it goto court and to the baliffs.

Just pay it you tight wads :D

Ah - the bi-weekly television thread.
Made up of the following groups:

1. Those that feel the world doesn't owe us a living so we pay for the license as we basicaly aren't criminals.
2. Those that don't pay it because they don't agree with it, yet still watch BBC programs and visit the BBC website and use iPlayer etc.
3. Those that say they never pay it but in fact do - Bravado on the Internet, you'll find a lot of these people in this thread.

You'll then find loads of "stories" about what people have apparently done when the TV licensing peole have turned up - see Internet Bravado.

Bottom line really.
If you use your television to recieve TV signals and actually watch TV you need a license.
If you don't own one you face a fine.
The License people have no right of entry when they knock on your door.
However any court will grant one very easily - so they will come back and if you've still got the television there.
The licensing people usually give you the option to pay up when they call around - to be honest this is your best option if you've decided to join the "big & clever" we don't pay the TV license yet we're happy to watch the BBC and/or drop £20+ on satellite TV.

They should move the TV license into some other tax which can't be dodged. They spend millions chasing it up each year, millions of pounds are lost in unpaid tax and the overall cost rises for us that do pay it.

Make it unavoidable or do away with it entirely and scrap the BBC.

If I didn't share I wouldn't have a tv license, simple as.

If they let me watch their entire back-catalogue I'd be fine with it, it's a subscription service after all, but if I want to watch a pre-recorded program I have to go out and buy the dvd - paying top whack (I can buy US shows cheaper).

I-player streaming is a good system, just stop the 7 day thing and start adding all your old stuff. Put a login that requires your tv license number too - job done :)

Of course the bbc cannot do that because they don't make their own shows - virtually everything is by an external producer and the bbc pays them - an old boys club designed to shuffle license money into thje pockets of tv execs.
