TwsT's 1700 vs 1800x comparison (warning large screenshots)

After initially ordering the 1700X I also dropped down to the 1700 an hour afterwards.

Still waiting on all parts (graphics card), but hoping the Gaming 5 gets the 1700 to 4Ghz with ease. Disable SMT and then renable it once the bug is fixed. Hopefully still stable at 4Ghz then.

Might be interesting to see how a higher clocked 1600X against it though.

So what voltage was actually needed for the 1700 to hit 4GHz stable on all cores? As you said you used that 1.525V because the 1800X wasn't playing ball.

AMD are saying 1.375V for long term usage, 1.45V as an absolute upper limit for general use. So hitting 4GHz at over 1.5V doesn't seem very useful...

I will be making a bundle with this type of configuration next week for sure so watch this space......... 1700 will be 8Pack approved level for sure as previously with 7600K and 7700K

Good work on these results. For me also the 1700 is running much cooler about 15 degrees under similar loads and benches which is worth pointing out too.

For me the 1700 makes the most sense of all AMD's Ryzen range.

This was exactly the info I was after, I cant think of a better place to get it.
I'd take up to a 15% variance on cost to buy from a company who actually share/value this sort of info and it's a primary reason OCuk remain my tek purchase goto site.

Well done...

That said I'm stalling a little on my ryzen set up as I don't know how well Iommu and virtualisation is supported, I'd love to see a workstation/nas/server test on this kit.
That missing I'llprobably still by because of shiny new stuff...

Excellent news. Would my Antec h1200 be sufficient cooling?

I would guess the 1600 might be the gamer's choice in the near term if it can clock high but the 1700 for me is the best all rounder.

if some one could share a review of the 1700 with a ASUS Prime / MSI carbon also please.

Would Thermalright true 140 power and the Cooler Master Seidon 240V Liquid CPU Cooler also be sufficient cooling?

Yes I agree here. It's amazing that a store will test like this and give the best option saving on cost. I would guess there would be higher profit increases for the company (if only slight) on some of the higher end CPUs so great job here!

OCUK is the only store who is binning and fully testing anything........... I am working at development level....... did anyone see prior to launch Scam had a 4.2. Ryzen bundle then on launch oh!!! we cant achieve the clocks best dial it back to oh STOCK!!......... there memory options on Ryzen STILL WAY off the mark.......... It was the same with BWE they had 4.6 bundle on launch.... Now its 4.2 OH DEAR ME!!!! 4.6 is like 3% or less of chips... I only found 3 chips to ever do this on ambient completely stable and one has several WR's.

If anything we improve with time and under promise. Then with further testing improve our knowledge and add it to our products eg 8Pack 5.1 7700K bundle every one went out at 5.2ghz.

It serves us to help you all make informed decisions, sure we might lose a little bit on you buying a cheaper CPU but hopefully you'll buy better memory or a better motherboard to squeeze that extra out of the chip.

The approach of yourself and 8pack and OCuk generally, pretty much guarantees my larger tech purchases are through OCuk and on price differences, when I've checked like for like there is either near parity or significant savings through here.

Not to mention haribo :)

I have a competitor who are local and for work stuff offer kit that OCuk don't, on the kit both companies do, like the R1700 They simply don't have inside detailed info up front, so I use OCuk who are also often cheaper and have more focused ranges.

By the way I went for the Asus prime bundle as the Asus manual shows a bios setting for iommu, couldn't find similar on MSI etc boards, though its possible others do support it.

I can only agree with what's been said regarding the ethos of OCUK now. I've been shopping here for a long time, back when you crossed your fingers and hoped something didn't go wrong because you were in for a hard time if it did...
Since the change of ownership it feels like the staff have been freed to run the company how they want to and I can only praise the efficiency, professionalism and quality of your staff and products. OCUK is always my first port of call now.

OK, enough blowing smoke, back to AMD! :D

I do a lot of video editing work (and some gaming when I can), so I'm always on the lookout for something that can really crunch the numbers to reduce the time it takes to recode a video. The 1800 chip seems to really give Intel a kicking (I have a i7 3770K atm), a Guru3D benchmark showed the 1800 as only 5fps lower than a £1500 Intel CPU for a third of the price, that's extraordinary!

Because I need stability above everything else I have never dabbled in overclocking and it seems that everyone is suggesting to go for a 1700 and OC it.

Is there any way of automatically OC'ing a chip if you have a whopping great cooler to go with it? Letting the computer OC it as necessary, or is it not as simple as that?
Or should I just be looking at a pre-OC'd bundle when OCUK are making them?

Finally, again because of the video, I use 32GB RAM. I'm aware that with Intel OC's more RAM can equal less OC...is the same true with AMD chips?

^^ In my bundles will provide settings.

Yes it's true for AMD too as stress on IMC.

32gb 2x16 is the best current configuration at 2600-2666 Mhz. These speeds won't effect oc much and stability on the higher end boards will be great.

Great thread, my R7 1700 will be here later, looking forward to trying something different. Intel has been very blah for a long time now. I can sacrifice a few FPS in gaming over the high clocked 7700K, VS massivley more performance everywhere else on the 1700. Yeah boi ! xD
