Type R and VTEC owners

No, the grading doesn’t. I wish the ‘inspectors’ went into that much detail with mine (4B). I had a few ‘surprises’ once I got her home

Edit - to be fair not all bad. I knew the car had been modified in the past. The Mugen suspension is great now I’ve had everything set up and at least the rear trim had already been cut for the rear brace :D

Hi there

Pumped tyres up in the week to 36psi all round cold as I noticed the ditch finders the S2000 came with were not re-inforced (XL) tyres, this help a lot with the rear end feeling like it was collapsing at high speed making it feel nervous, an extra 4psi all round made a nice improvement.

Yesterday I fitted Hardrace anti-roll bar bushes all round and Hardrace re-inforced drop links, over yesterday and today I've spent around 2-3hrs driving the car and enjoying the roads whilst in search of supermarkets with no queues and though the tyre pressures made a great improvement the roll bar bushes and drop links seem to have sharpened up the car nicely. Have a lot more confidence in the car to push harder and even happy to turn of the VSA, all car really does is understeer which is no doubt attributed to the 10yr old Bridgestones on the front which feel like plastic and are heavily cracked.

Absolutely love driving the car, in town you just chill off the VTEC, find some nice empty roads and just unleash the VTEC YO, its not fast but it feels fast on VTEC as cross over is so pronounced with the air box modifications. Taking the car to Jaguar specialist this Friday coming for alignment so we are gonna see which bolts are not seized, I expect most shall be as getting the drop links off required the use of power tools (grinder) as they had corroded so much, only one came off easily which was evidently not a Honda part so relatively new as it just undid, the others needed grinding off or use of mole grips.

Am glad I re-visited the S2000, the 2008 is certainly a big step up from my 1999 car, not just because of age difference I imagine but also because its a much younger car and from my visual inspection all bushes look fine, so if all goes well shall only be replacing compliance bushes along with rear toe arms and front tie rods.

Surprising you doing all this before sorting the tyres !

Good luck with the bushes. But as said it’s the adjusters that’s seize to the bush insert. You ain’t gonna be able to eyeball that.

Tyres would be first but nowhere is open to refurb the AP2V1 wheels I have for those new tyres until another 1-2 weeks if lockdown eases around May 11-14th and more businesses reopen.

But garage this week to find out what bushes are seized and then I can buy new bushes and adjusters as required.

Hi there

Had the S2000 aligned over weekend, you will have to ignore the previous figures as the car never went on the ramp as it was as I had managed to get hold of a lot of used but never fitted Hardrace items from an abandoned track car project, so I had:
- Hardrace spherical bump steer correction tie rod ends
- Febi / Bilstein inner track rods
- Hardrace hard rubber upper front arms with camber adjust
- Hardrace spherical bump steer correction rear toe arms
- Hardrace anti-roll bar bushes and drop links front and rear which I fitted myself last weekend

Manage to get all the above for under £500 which made sense to me and my man maths.

So the garage of course just set about removing the old upper arms, original rear toe arms and tie rods, it all came apart ok apart from one rear toe arm being seized but heat sorted it out.

Inspection to all bushes and garage said they all looked fine, no rips, no cracking apart from some aging on the front compliance bushes and the bolts being seized.

So once the parts were fitted they went to do alignment and the front caster bolts were totally seized up but thankfully they were seized on +6 either side so within spec.
The rear camber bolts are also seized but they did manage to get them to give way a little and got them reasonably close:

Alignment sheet below:

I did all threads with anti-seize as did the garage as well.

They did a collect and drop off service in the end, so collected it Friday and dropped it back off today and then told me to drive it and let them know the changes but the garage owners father collected the car and when he gave it his son his comment was it drove a bit like a skate board lol, so when he brung it back he was like that drives a lot better now but let us know what you think.

I gave them my own settings which are dialled in above, except for rear camber which the target was 1:45 (degrees & minutes) but with them being seized it was hard to get them, of course the adjustable toe arms give a little of camber adjust etc.

As I am at stock ride height and have parts designed for a track/race car Hardrace advised to put all the washers on bottom which should make them match originals which they were correct and the garage commented that the toe arms front and rear were more or less parallel with the lower arms and around 10mm drop would perfect that, which is in future planning anyway. In my drive I am experiencing no bumpsteer, steering feels more direct and more feelsome now.

So the plan is now is to refresh the lower arm bushes front and rear so en-route is:
- Mugen front compliance bushes
- Spoon lower coilover lower arm bushes
- Spoon lower rear camber bushes.

So all I need is the front most bushes for the lower arms now I think and caster and camber bolts? Plus some coilovers which Ohlins DFV are favoured to get around 15mm drop.

Taken the car out for a drive and it turns in much better, ride feels more compliant also which is quite odd but welcome, car just feels sharper, more pointy and back end aint moving and braking hard from high speed seems far more stable, overall the alignment has made a great improvement and cannot wait to change wheels over with a set of F1AS5's fitted. :)

I kept the rear toe low as per Simon's advice as most people seem to dial in 20 minutes per side but AP2 needs less anyway due to different mounting points so went with 20 minutes total and car seems more go-kart in its response, turn in is better, once the car is totally finished I may further reduce the rear toe in more. :)

Awesome! Good work on that. It'll be in an epic condition once you're done with it :) I have not touched mine since early march :(

Yeah enjoying it. The car feels more connected and direct now.

I'd probably leave it as it is now but I already ordered the Mugen compliance bushes (still awaiting delivery) and found spoon lower damper bushes all round and rear most lower arm spoon bushes which I got whole lot for £70 as again an abandoned project car, so made sense as those bushes new are near £200.

The question is now if I am to refresh the lower arms, what else do I need, as I guess I need the lower rear arm most forward bush and the lower arm front most forward bush too but nothing seems available, so could I just leave the originals in, they seem in good condition?

Then the set of Ohlins and F1AS5, should be pretty awesome car, dont want to mess with power delivery too much but would be nice to have more go hence considering a 4.44 or 4.62 rear end.

You've decided to go for f1as5s then? I have them on the front of my crown, it is a completely different car but they handle the mass really well! Front rarely washes out even on wet roads.

Yeah the only complaint I've seen about F1AS2/3 is soft sidewalls, but I have also seen this said of the PS4 as well, just far less so as it is for F1AS3, seems F1AS2 was worse impacted. The F1AS5 is a newer tyre than PS4 and also seems to match or beat it in reviews or be as well regarded. I'd say based on F1AS5 been as good as PS4 the only advantage the PS4 has is those Michelins do have attractive sidewall designs compared to other tyres and they also seem a but chunkier even for same size.

They just seem worth a go and compared to Toledo TL1000 rear and 10yr old Bridgestone Turanza fronts, anything will be a big step change and F1AS5 are highly rated. The only option is AD08RS but they won't come close to PS4 or F1AS5 in the wet.

Wouldn’t worry too much. You can compensate a bit with sidewalls with suspension. A bit of compliance is good for grip rather than skittish rears

Very true and as I’ve formed suspension up a bit already with the harder bushes and spherical bearing a bit added compliance with tyres will be good. Can’t wait to get tyres on this car as it handles amazingly well even on these terrible tyres.

I've got fedup of waiting.

Ordered a set of F1AS5 to fit to the current wheels, £400 all in including fitting at my home next Monday.
Will then get the Ohlins ordered and new lower bushes so next big job.

Then if tyres I like will no doubt get another set for the wheels here or try PS4 or CSC6 for my own comparison.

Just got fedup of the car washing wide due to rubbish tyres so just means I will have two nice sets of wheels with good tyres.

f1as5s are good tyres! i wouldn't worry about and I don't think you'll see much difference between them and ps4.

especially keeping in mind that ps4 is an older tyre, goodyear is much newer etc.

at that "high" end performance tyre bracket they're all much of the muchness I think.

Not in my experience, different brands have very different feel despite all being in the same category. Never liked Goodyears, found they make a nice handling car wobble around like a Cadillac. Maybe things have changed with the new 5th gen but I wouldn't like to bet on it. Always preferred a Yoko or Bridgestone in the past. Just got Mich PS4 fitted on my MarkX and drove it properly the first time yesterday and have to say I am impressed, very good balanced tyre, comfortable ride, quiet, sharp direct steering. Perfect for a daily, only slight criticism is the outright dry grip isn't really anything to write home about, expected it to be better.

oh yeah there are differences don't get me wrong. I didn't gel with as3s either that I had on my z4 coupe and got rid and replaced with v105s yoko which were much better.

but I've got as5s now on the front of my car and they're really decent.

on the other hand, s2000 is very sensitive to tyres so something that works on one car might be bad on the other.

either way I am interested to see what Gibbo thinks of them! always good to have options.

Amazed it took so long to replace those crappy ones !

Well was hoping wheel refurb place would open as they can work contactless but I am guessing they are enjoying their paid for holiday and are happy to just wait.

My main fear but this set of wheels will be the designated Winter set, so a softer more wobbly tyre with wet/cold grip won't be a bad thing. :)

Indeed we shall find out, if the F1AS5 I find not so great then my options are CPC6, PS4 or AD08RS to put on other wheels.

But all reviews seem to suggest the F1AS5 and CPC6 are right up there with PS4 and in some ways better. I will only go AD08RS if they F1AS5 feel too soft and wobbly but should be ok as the S2000 at just over 1250kg is not particularly heavy.
